1 In distinguishing plural meanings and dimensions of human well-being, John Stuhr affirms this point in “Flourishing: Toward Clearer Ideas and Habits of Genius”: “Any practically relevant and critically applicable notion of flourishing must confront, acknowledge, and embrace the great diversity of human lives and the big fact of pluralism.” A similar stress on, and explicit commitment to, pluralism and diversity is set forth by Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, Mark Johnson, Michele Moody-Adams, and Jessica Wahman in their chapters in this volume.

3 Compare Jennifer L. Hansen’s discussion of philosophy as an autotelic activity in “A Reconsideration of the Role of Philosophy in the Reconstruction of Leisure,” her chapter in this volume. Hansen also stresses the fact that the humanities frequently fail to contribute to human flourishing—which she analyzes more in terms of technological rationality and economic market forces rather than matters of personal character or the structure and history of the professional discipline of philosophy.

4 Here see Valerie Tiberius’s goal fulfillment account of flourishing and her claim that in almost all cases “what’s good for people is intimately tied to what they value,” “Well-Being, Value Fulfillment, and Valuing Capacities: Toward a More Subjective Hybrid,” this volume.
