painful event of his childhood every single day of his life for thirty years, recalling the mood with Proustian piety, and faithfully reconstructing the early state of terror whenever some detail of environment (like the enclosure of a dug-out) suggested the pattern of the original stimulus.

Responses of such depth can probably be established in two ways: by abruptness or by duration. "Trauma" is the term generally used when a meaning is established by abruptness. A terrifying accident is traumatic. And some psychologists also lay great emphasis upon the "trauma of birth," a shocking revolutionary experience when the organism leaves its placental heaven, where it had led the life of Riley, and bursts into the harsh world of combat. At times of shock, some attendant circumstance may become associatively endowed with all the meaning of the experience itself. Synecdochically (by the principle of the "part for the whole") this association may even serve to restore the quality of the experience. Thus, a certain kind of wallpaper, or a certain tone of voice, or the gleam of a surgeon's instrument, may remain forever endowed with "affect" because of its accidental association with the informing experience itself. Such traumatic response may be seen less spectacularly in the fact that a cat, after having his toes pinched by a suddenly opened door, learns to move back from the door when he hears footsteps approaching.
