CHAPTER TWENTY
KHALIL
Khalil was seething when he got back to his cell. His ex-wifeâs unforgiveness made him sick with anger.
Celia knew nothing, and he couldnât believe she had the audacity to almost blatantly accuse him of doing harm to that girl. Khalil had banked on his ex-wife still having some feelings for him. She used to trust him, and he used to glory in the delightful way her eyes followed him when he was in a room. There had been a rare love . . . a passionate union throughout the fifteen years of marriage. But now she wanted to act like he was such a horrible person. Now she behaved as if he were lower than a Lake Michigan bottom feeder.
âHow did it go, man? You seemed pretty excited to see your ex-wife. Are you two going to reconcile or what?â Stick piped from the top bunk as their cell doors clanked shut.
After three weeks of solitary confinement for fighting, in which he was only allowed outside his cell for two hours a day, Stick was allowed back to his cell. His mood swings kept getting him in trouble. Right before they locked him down, he tried to strangle another inmate with some dental floss he had found. Nobody ever knew when something in Stickâs brain would click and make him violent. If he got another offense on his record, they would be sending him to a super maximum security facility. They forced him to take a prescription of Risperal for his bipolar disorder. Since being returned to the general population, Stick was as mellow as a sundried cucumber.
Khalil gritted his teeth. âNot likely. Sheâs giving me a hard time and wants to hold the past against me. I canât change anything that happened back when we were together, and I refuse to keep being badgered about it. She made some unnecessary accusations. Seeing her just confirmed that I need to move on with my life. Iâm going to stay focused on getting out of this place, and somehow Iâll find a way to see my kids without her say-so.â
Stickâs voice flowed from the top bunk. âNever trust a woman. Women are nothing but trouble. They donât know what they want and play too many games. Women are the reason most of us are in here in the first place. All my charges come from me trying to take care of my woman. When I robbed that Check-n-Go, it was to pay our bills, because I didnât have a job. Did she see it that way? Heck, no. She thought I was being violent because I had to knock the cashier over the head with the butt of the gun for him to open the register. She visited me for the first year, rode up here with my homeboy from Saginaw. They stopped coming, and I didnât know why. Then I find out they moved in together. I didnât know who I wanted to kill first . . . her or him.
