Chapter Four

Three planet rotations had passed and her cyborg remained with her. He helped her care for Weilai, optimized their ship’s systems, shared stories about his violence-filled, adventurous past. They enjoyed each other’s forms. Five, six times a rest cycle.

She bubbled with his nanocybotics, slept in his arms, and with every passing moment, she grew to care for him more and more. Weilai was becoming attached to him also.

Her baby currently lay in her sleeping support, smiling up at Surge. The cyborg made his blue eyes flash and Weilai kicked her little feet with happiness, delighted by his antics.

Surge was wonderful, was all she could wish in a male, yet one small aspect of their relationship bothered Nu. It niggled at her, preventing her from achieving lasting happiness.

She leaned against the console and stared at the main viewscreen. An image of the battle station positioned close to them was displayed. That massive vessel contained thousands of her cyborg’s brethren.

She hadn’t met any of those warriors.

Surge said they had heard of her. The dolls were crafted by Hoarse, one of the warriors. But Talat had told her his family knew of her also. And he had lied.

Her cyborg claimed his kind couldn’t lie but was he lying about lying? And was he lying about his brethren knowing about her?

Was she another male’s dirty little secret?

Or was she creating problems where there weren’t any? Her lips twisted.

She hadn’t told her family about Surge either. But that was because everything concerning her life at the moment was hidden. Her parents, her sisters, hadn’t been informed about Weilai’s existence. They didn’t know where in the universe she was presently located. Or the truth about why she had left her home planet.

And she grew weary of that deception. “I’m tired of hiding, of being hidden.”

When she had said that to Talat, it had been the beginning of the end. Her stealth encounters with him had decreased in both duration and frequency. He immediately became ‘busy,’ had other more important things to do.

Nu held her breath and waited for Surge’s response, wanting his reaction to be different, bracing herself if it wasn’t.

“I’m not hiding you, my female.” Her cyborg moved quickly to her side and wrapped his arms around her. “All of my brethren process I’ve found you, that you are mine.”

His body heat curled around her, comforting her.

“I haven’t met any of your brethren.” She leaned into him, savoring his strength.

Her cyborg medic shifted his weight from one booted foot to the other and she tensed. It was a silent admission of guilt.

“Why is that?” She pushed for the truth.

Surge sighed. “Once my brethren meet you, they’ll want to spend time with you and Weilai. There are thousands of them. We’ll seldom be alone.” He paused. “I wanted to have the two of you to myself for a short duration.”

He wasn’t hiding her—he was hoarding her. Her heart melted. She turned within the circle of his arms, tilted her head back, gazed up at him. “I have enjoyed the past few planet rotations.
