Applying this question to our schedule made it obvious what should stay, what should go, what should increase, and what should be dialed back. Asking it day after day was how we brought clarity to the chaos of our family calendar. Asking it year after year was how we continued moving toward our goal as our kids grew up.

The answers Andy and I landed on changed categorically as our family moved through the different parenting stages. I called them my “categorical nos.”

Pre-Kids

Before Andrew was born, Andy and I had the freedom to say yes to almost everything. We worked together and traveled together a lot. Just about the only things we scratched from our schedule were ones that would stretch us too far financially. They failed the litmus test of being good for our relationship.
