Open your mind
A lot of us come to Hellenic Paganism with some basic knowledge of the Gods of Olympus, childhood story books, history class and those black and white films from yesteryear. Before I stepped on to the path of a Hellenic Pagan, I was quite happy with a basic understanding of the Big Twelve, Aphrodite Goddess of Love, for example, and a few favoured myths.
Now, after a few years of wandering this path and practicing as a Hellenic pagan, I believe itâs incredibly narrow-minded to think of Aphrodite as simply the Goddess of Love, Sheâs rather more complex and the same can be said of all the Theoi, in fact Aphrodite alone has more than 30 different names/titles or Epithets pertaining to her character, appearance, and places she has been worshipped which can be gleaned from reading ancient poems and writings. These are where us Hellenics find our correspondences, especially offerings and ideas for altars. Having a translated copy of the Homeric and Orphic Hymns is incredibly valuable.
Iâm also guilty of further narrow-minded statements such as, Hera is the jealous wife of Zeus and Zeus himself is a big flirt. How can you not come to these conclusions based on the myths in those story books or the thousands of association charts out there?
Itâs OK to come here with those same thoughts, just know that deepening your relationship is about finding all the different facets of a being. I am not only a Hellenic Pagan; Iâm also a wife and I work in Mental Health. I am not just one title, and neither are you or our divine beings.
How did I open my mind beyond research and observations? I added another layer of exploration; my own personal experience or UPG (Unverified Personal Gnosis) Now, Iâve never had a God appear to me to tell me something groundbreaking, other than when Iâve done guided meditations and Iâm not sure thatâs a God as much as it is my imagination and intuition speaking. I donât hear any whispers from the divine, but Iâve heard others who have. I believe these people are truly blessed.
If any of this does happen to you, donât be afraid, go with it, you definitely should write about it, make note of the messages - thatâs a deeply personal experience to do with your relationship with your divine beings. It might be a direction to head, something to look up, an association you hadnât thought of. Itâs important whatever it is, to you. Sometimes if enough people have had the same experience, and share the same revelation then it might become VPG (Verified Personal Gnosis) or community Gnosis.
I meditate every day. I use a guided meditation app to help me find my breath and the non-judgmental stillness within to observe where I am emotionally and physically. I dedicate this time to Lord Dionysos for taking care of my emotional wellbeing; one of his many facets is to bring and/or cure âmadnessâ.
During this time, sometimes I will ask for a message from Lord Apollon or Lord Hermes.
