"Doud," said Jack Spain, drawing his gun and joining Fleeger at the door, "back off. You were an oath-founder of this chapter. You know no one quits the committee."

"By God!" Harriman cried. "That's not good enough for me any more." He wheeled on the others. "How about it, boys? She deep enough for anybody else?"

Selman Draco's bad eye bulged. Invisibly swift, he drew a Colt's Navy Caliber .36-percussion revolver.

"No one will leave," he said.

The impasse was dissolved by Dansk Jensen. Noting the rapt attention of all to the conflict between Draco and the editor, the immensely strong blacksmith stepped in behind Spain and Fleeger, seized them up by their necks, and cracked their skulls ringingly together. Fleeger weighed in excess of two hundred fifty pounds; Spain was not a small man. Their combined crash to the planked floor -bounced haybales and rattled coal-oil lanterns on their hooks.

"Ya," announced Dansk calmly, straightening from his inspection of the numbed bodies, "we go, friend Harriman."

They went out into the barn proper, closing the door behind them. There was no pursuit, Draco holstered his weapon. "Let the record show they violated Rule Nine," he said to George Lambert. "This meeting is adjourned."

"Not quite," denied Frenchy Burloign. "We want to know about Elvira Semple. We know Rule Nine, but what about the woman? We all liked her. Why did you not?"

"I read the charge in the street," said Draco carefully. "You heard it. Four decent women of this camp testified their men received favors of this woman without fee proper, and not in the Oriental or its adjacent wagons. Read Rule Five. This sort of thing does not go in any mining camp of the Rocky Mountains. Do you doubt the four women?"

"Never, patron, I doubt their husbands."

"You expect the husbands to confront the town?"

"If they don't, patron, it's hearsay testimony." 84
