Chapter Eleven

Georgiana had nearly drifted into a light doze when the sensation of Baldwin’s hand sliding down her back woke her with shivering awareness.

In the gloom, it was difficult to know what time it was, but the warmth of the duke’s body next to hers was both comforting and exciting, and with her head resting in the crook of his arm, it was all too intimate. When his hand drifted lower to the curve of her rear, she sucked in a soft breath.

Had he meant to do that?

“Baldwin?” As she pushed gently at his chest, rain drummed on the roof of the guard house. It was exceedingly odd to be inside such a structure, but with the duke, she’d already had so many interesting experiences, this was almost commonplace. “Perhaps we should…” Her words trailed off, for he’d nuzzled into the crook of her shoulder, and the sensations that zipped through her body as a result were so delicious, she held her breath in the hopes he would continue.

“Hmm?” The reverberation of his voice being so close to her ear had awareness of him multiplying.

“What are you doing?”

“Endeavoring to kiss you,” he replied in a low voice as if the answer was obvious.

Perhaps it was, and her brain was lagging behind because she couldn’t make sense of what was happening. “But… why?” Not that she minded. The sensual glide of his lips along the side of her neck was quite pleasant.

“I want to.” He dragged those lips down to follow the curve of her bodice. “Truth be told, I need to—need you to calm the storm.”

What storm? It was merely raining. As she fisted her hand into his lapel, the meaning behind his words dawned on her. The demons he silently fought with every day, the nightmares that he suffered, the pain and the guilt could be kept at bay when he indulged in kissing.

“Oh.” With a tiny sigh, she slipped her hand up his chest to curl about his nape. The scents of cedarwood and citrus teased her nose, and daring much, she placed an experimental kiss beneath his jaw. The wonderfully arousing texture of the just forming evening stubble caught her by surprise, so she skated her lips along the jawline, and when she arrived at the place on his neck where smooth skin met shadow, flutters were released in her belly. The contrast was quite heady, indeed.

When he cupped her bottom and pulled her flush to his body with a groan, Georgiana shifted her position slightly in order to loop her arms about his shoulders. Such strong shoulders, and as his arms went more securely about her, a thrill danced down her spine. This was the height of scandalous—even being here bordered on the criminal—but then the worry flew right out of her mind, for she was with him, and she knew with unwavering certainty that he would protect her from all harm.

He finally claimed her lips with his, and she nearly cried from the tenderness of the embrace.
