Chapter Sixteen
Damn, she was beautiful. Her hair wild and carefree, the determination on her face and in her voice as she stepped up next to Preston. Mikail wanted to hold her tight and never let her go.
He wanted to kiss away all the pain heâd inflicted on her with his rejections. Yes, he was fully aware of how hurt she was. She was lousy at hiding her emotions. Always had been. Heâd have to help her work on that. A queen should not wear her emotions on her sleeve.
She didnât know it, but she was about to make some difficult decisions. Well, they would be difficult for Mikail.
Maybe not so much for her.
She was going to have to choose a Lead Watcher, and Preston was a very real contender for the position. He was far more aware of the goings-on of this war, was much better prepared to protect her. Hell, heâd suspected Zadkiel from the beginning. If the queen had listened to him, sheâd still be alive. Faith was very much aware of this.
Preston was definitely her most logical option.
And once she chose Preston as her Lead Watcher, he would become Mikail and Druâs boss.
Dru would hate it. Hell, Mikail hated the idea too. Not that there was anything wrong with Preston; it was the principle of the thing. The Lead Watcher hat had been Mikailâs for so long, it was going to be a struggle to answer to someone besides his queen on the regular. For fuckâs sake, he hadnât even had to answer to her for the last forty years. His role had taken the term autonomous to new levels.
As their new boss, Preston would have the right to dismiss Mikail and Dru from their positions, although Mikail doubted that would happen. Preston was too smart for that, and as all signs pointed toward an imminent war, Faithâs followers would need every able body they had.
Even if Mikail stayed on, he wouldnât be by Faithâs side at all times. Heâd be the one standing watch outside her door or on the balcony. Watching the periphery instead of directly protecting her.
That distance would make it a hell of a lot easier for her to get past their brief affair, to move on, to forget him. Or at least forget him as a lover.
It was exactly what he should wantâ¦and exactly what he feared. Fates be damned, he was cursed either way.
Preston walked forward, Faith at his side, while Dru and Mikail held back. Preston lifted his hand in greeting, and the Warrior on duty relaxed her stance. Preston had not lied; they obviously knew him.
Mikail caught snatches of the exchange; Preston mentioned crazy rumors about a lost princess that had started in the last few months. Crazy rumors? Had he started them? Because no one else knew about Faith, and anyway, why would said rumors start up forty years after her birth?
The Warrior suddenly dropped to one knee and bowed her head, and whether this was contrived or not, it would soon be official.
