Chapter Twenty-Four

I would not show these assholes how scared I was. Getting up on an altar shouldn’t hurt me, unless I fell off. If doing so kept Lexi safe, I would do it. I just didn’t know what they thought would happen. I wasn’t special.

I climbed up the leg, taking care to place each foot carefully. Pulling myself onto the tabletop was awkward, but I could do it. What was strange, though, was while I was climbing, I felt as if there was someone encouraging me, helping me to climb the altar. Something pricked my skin, making it tingle. It didn’t hurt, but it felt welcoming, as if it knew I needed to be here, on this altar.

I frowned, sitting on the cool flat surface with my legs over the edge. I looked around the cave, seeing all aspects of it. There were things I couldn’t see when I was down on the floor. There was an alcove in the corner, close to where we were sitting, with a small pool in the corner. It felt like a place to hide away.

I could see the stones, laid out in a manner that I could only recognize from up here. Among the larger stone panels that held the shifter stories, there were smaller stones lying behind them fashioned into a Celtic knot design, the larger stones acting as boundaries. They would have looked random from down on the floor, but up here, the design was obvious.

I looked up and saw the lights sparkling above me. They reminded me of the strands, so I switched into my sight and saw the colors swirling up there. There were the ones that moved slower over the panels of those they represented, and then others which were dancing above us all. Joyously dancing. I could almost hear laughter coming from them, and I strained to listen.

I felt prickles along my skin and I crossed my arms, smoothing my hands up and down my biceps. That didn’t help. The feeling grew stronger and then I saw more sparkles from the walls fill the air. I gasped, slowly standing, my head back to watch in wonder. I reached up to touch them. I almost wanted them to take me with them, except I needed to stay with Lexi.

The magic in this place was visible. It rained down on me, covering me in colored lights, touching every part of me. I flung my arms out to let it enter me and I smiled.

Home. This felt like home. This place was where I would be most welcomed every time I visited here.

It was as if every spec of light was talking to me and only me. I heard soft, feminine laughter.
