Chapter Thirty-One
Jessamine breathed deeply, bracing herself for what would come. Turiel had no true power over her. Yes, he had influence over her father, but he was not the Emperor. He could not harm her, no matter how he tried to intimidate her.
And no matter what, this child was no concern of his. She braced herself to hold strong however she must.
Turiel smiled broadly as he stepped across the threshold. âWhat a gathering you hold.â
The Heirâs face was cold and without pretense. âYou are not welcome here. You have no invitation and no right to enter my tent without permission.â
âYour guards did not stop me when I moved past,â Turiel said. âI didnât even bring a set of my own. There was no one for them to fight but me, and you know they wouldnât dare strike me.â
The Heir stepped forward with feline grace. âNevertheless, you are not welcome here.â
Turiel ignored him and smiled down at Jessamine. âI had heard there was to be a shipment tonight, a wagon that the Heir had specifically requested not be disturbed by my sentries. I had imagined it would be special, but I hadnât dared hope that it could contain such a precious item sent straight across the Alethian borders. Impressive that you managed to arrange such an entrance, especially from the heart of the enemy, when all along they should have considered you a traitor.â
Jessamine smiled with all of her teeth, refusing to be cowed by his presence. âAmazing the trust that some have in me, isnât it?â
Turiel shifted his gaze to Henric. âYou mean, amazing how foolish the Alethians can be?â
âNow Turiel,â the Heir drawled, âeven you must admit itâs impressive that Jessamine could navigate between enemy lines.â
Turiel folded his arms. âTrue. I would be most interested to hear the lines of communication she used. But more importantly, Iâm sure you can tell us plenty. My first question is how do Selah and William, our favored bright and shadow ones, fare on their quest?â
Jessamine hadnât yet told the Heir. That should have been one of the first updates she had given him. âThey are moving along as they always have.â
âA vague answer,â Turiel said. âIâve had word of their movements. I know their general direction. Shule will know more soon enough. I hope they are prepared for him. Well, thatâs not entirely true. Iâd rather them be somewhat unprepared.â
Jessamine had hoped that Shule had remained with the Mirandan forces. It was a small wish, one she had known would be unrealistic. In essence, she was a realist and a pragmatist. Deep down, she knew it would come to this, a final push for Shule to steal from Selah and William. Shule had told her as much in the Northern Isles.
She maintained a casual air, still leaning forward. âYes, your age-long second plan is in place. I hope he is prepared, given how much he dislikes fighting his sister. Tell me, who do you believe would kill the other? Would Selah be
