Sunlight flooded the window as Nox eased himself away from Athena’s sleeping form. Leaving her was difficult. Her storm gray hair was tousled and free, curling around her shoulder and the pillow. He wanted to crawl back into bed and kiss her full lips until her lovely eyes fluttered open, and he could give her more than kisses.

But he needed to see if any hails had gotten responses and try to send out another round of hails. He paused, worried that leaving might upset Athena like it had yesterday. He might need to wake her before he left to let her know. Making her feel like he didn’t care wasn’t something he ever wanted to do again. But he thought again about how important it was to ensure the coms got out. Her safety could be jeopardized if he stayed in bed. That made him move quicker.

Yesterday had been an odd situation. Odd and frustrating. The archeologists insisted on doing the hails and hadn’t let him into the ship. He’d tried, but Teery insistently took him to the quarters with Athena, stating he needed rest. A female had taken his message and instructions, promising she would send out the coms. Nox had watched her go to the ship, but it would have been better to go with her. He’d not been given that opportunity, much to his displeasure.

There was something about the people… He hadn’t given it much thought at first, but he woke up this morning feeling uneasy. Telepathy wasn’t a common gift. Nox knew very few who had the ability, and nothing in the data he read about the archeologists noted they were telepathic.

Since the Atlanteans joined the Pax Alliance, he was given more information about the allied species and systems. Telepathic beings were rare. They fascinated Nox because their ability was similar to how deep a soul bond could become between mates. Telepathy went past emotion sensing and into sensing thoughts. He always paid special attention to the telepaths and had met a few. But not like Ricchar, Feliza, Teery, and most of the other archeologists, which was odd considering this was an Alliance-funded dig site, or was, according to the data.

And why were there so many here? He’d expected a small group, not entire families. He’d seen children yesterday. Children at a dig site.

Then there was the question of why the dwellings the archeologists had erected looked so permanent. Nox studied the room he and Athena were given. The furniture was heavy, solid, and difficult to move. None of the items in the room looked like they were made to be moved easily.

He needed answers. Athena sighed and rustled in the bed. Nox looked down at her. He wanted to crawl back into bed, but there was the possibility that they were in danger and not just from the Scrivians. Athena’s safety was paramount. He sat down next to her and gently shook her awake.

Green eyes opened and regarded him sleepily. Athena yawned, and her fangs flashed.
