“What are you looking at me like that for?” Eric demanded.

“So the gay dude is gonna be working here, huh?”

Eric frowned. “Yes, he is. And stop calling him ‘the gay dude’. His name is Mathew.”

“Denny, you know I don’t mean anything by it,” Dave said. “Just making fun.”

“Well, you can’t talk like that around him,” Eric replied. “I don’t want there to be an HR issue in here.”

Dave waved his hand, as if dismissing Eric’s remark. “We talk shit about each other all the time here. I’m sure he’ll get used to it.”

“Doesn’t matter. I don’t want you making him feel uncomfortable. I want him to feel welcome here.”

“He’ll feel welcome here,” Dave said. “And I’m sure you’re gonna help with that.”

Eric felt his breath get caught in his throat. “What do you mean by that?”

“I mean you’re his supervisor. You’re the one that’s gonna be showin’ him the ropes around here. Of any of us, you’re the one that’s gonna be making him feel welcome.”

***

The following Monday, Eric was the first person in the office, arriving at a quarter to eight in the morning. He went to desk and booted up his computer. He checked his emails and list of appointments for the day, but he could not truly concentrate on what he was doing. Eric’s mind was on Mathew the whole time. He had not even gotten that much sleep last night, despite going to bed around ten in the evening. He was filled with equal parts of anxiety and excitement; Eric anticipated Mathew’s arrival, but at the same time, he slightly dreaded.

Wonder if he feels the same way, Eric thought.

No. Mathew would probably walk in the office and feel right at home. He would most likely come in with the same confident, cocky charm that he displayed during his interview and at the bar all those months ago. Or maybe he would be different. Eric could not one-percent know for sure until he arrived.

Eric was busy checking his emails, when he heard a knock on the front door. Looking up from his computer monitor, Eric saw Mathew standing at the door. He waved at Eric.

Fuck, he’s here.

Eric’s heartbeat started to quicken as he rose from his seat and headed for the door.

This is it.

Eric unlocked the door and stepped aside as Mathew walked in. Mathew was dressed casually, but professionally, in a dark blue buttoned-down shirt that clung nicely to his lithe frame, and a pair of tight-fitting, cream-colored slacks. Eric caught a whiff of whatever cologne Mathew was wearing and it made his dick stir. “Good morning.”

Mathew smiled. “Morning, Boss.”

“You don’t gotta call me Boss,” Eric said as he closed and shut the door.

“I know. I just want to.”

Eric felt his skin grow hot. “Um…you’re here a bit early,” he stated, checking his watch. It was eight-thirty on the dot. The office did not open for another half an hour.

“Yeah, I’m riding the bus,” Mathew answered. “So I wanted to make sure I got here on time.
