CHAPTER ELEVEN

CLAIRE LET THE KIDS choose their daily chores from the list. Then she set them to the task of interviewing each other using a set of predetermined questions so that they could get to know one another better while she made a chart and timetable for their chores.

Through the open windows of the dining room she saw a big, dually truck and horse trailer pull into the parking area of the adjacent stable yard. Seth, who had been sitting close enough to Micah to keep him in line, looked out, then left the table.

“It’s my brother Lane with Rube,” he told her as he headed outside.

The driver circled, positioning the rig so that the trailer opened onto the barn area. Seth stopped abruptly in the doorway as the truck came to a stop with the cab facing their direction.

“What the hell is he doing here?” he muttered.

“Something wrong?” Claire asked.

“No,” Seth said, but the anger in his voice and his clenched fists told her otherwise.

She joined him at the door, following his gaze to an older man sitting in the passenger seat of the truck. “Who is that?”

“My loving father,” he growled. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

A man wearing a big white Stetson stepped down from the driver’s seat and came around the front of the cab. Even from a distance, Claire could see his resemblance to Seth, though he was stockier and had dark hair showing below his hat.

Curious about what was going on outside, Claire turned to her campers and said, “When you finish your interviews, come inside and I’ll introduce you to your horses.”

The brothers met halfway to the bunkhouse and shook hands, then Lane pulled Seth into a quick embrace and clapped him on the back a few times before Seth pulled away. Seth glared past his brother to the truck.

“I told you not to bring him,” Seth said.

“What was I supposed to do? It’s Dad. And I needed his truck and his trailer to get your horse up here.”

Claire stepped onto the porch and the two men cut the conversation short. Clearly upset, Seth glanced from her to the man in the truck and back, then brought his brother over.

“Claire, this is my brother Lane. Claire’s the director of the camp I told you about.”

Lane’s face broke into a broad grin that deepened the creases at the corners of his dark eyes. “So you’re the one who wrangled my brother into real work? First person who’s ever been able to do that.”

Claire smiled. Lane was a nice-looking guy, but nothing to compare with his brooding younger brother. “I don’t think it’ll be nearly exciting enough for him, but he’s stuck for a few weeks.”

“There’s not much that’s as exciting as what he likes to do. But none of us ever talked any sense into him.”

“Okay, enough,” Seth said impatiently. “Help me get Rube out, so you can be on your way.”

“Nice to meet you, Claire. If my baby brother gives you any trouble, just let me know.
