I enjoyed hanging out with my friends Bradley and Maurice. Since they knew about my operation, I didnât have to worry about them getting suspicious about how much money I was spending and snooping around. Carmen, one of Bradleyâs girlfriends, became a runner. She was an airline stewardess and could easily do pickups in faraway cities.
One night, Maurice and I went out to a club called the Gas House in West Covina. I always parked my Ferrari right out front. On the dance floor, I spotted a guy who was really working itâswiveling, twisting and turning, gyrating like a gymnast. He was already sweating. I liked guys who danced with cool, smooth control, and he was not my style. But in his skin-tight jeans with his white T-shirt clinging to his well-muscled chest, he was certainly sexy. With his mustache and shiny, loose curls on his head, he looked like Philip Michael Thomas, who played Detective Rico Tubbs on Miami Vice.
Maurice noticed me watching him. âOh, you like the pretty boys,â he teased.
I ignored him and managed to catch the pretty boyâs eye, but he quickly looked away. Most men I sought the attention of easily flirted back.
âMaurice,â I said, âplease go ask that guy if heâll come and talk to me.â
Maurice went over to the guy. I watched as they chatted. The guy glanced at me a few times as Maurice whispered in his ear. Seeming displeased, he shook his head, and Maurice started walking back.
âHeâs not interested,â Maurice said, baffled.
âReally?â I laughed, surprised. I knew I looked good. I knew I could get any guy in the club. Why was he playing hard to get? A challenge? I found it irresistible.
âForget it,â Maurice said when he saw the intrigued look on my face. âThereâs all kinds of guys here. Some look better than him.â
âNot to me,â I told him. I was locked in. âGo back over there and make him interested. At least get his phone number.â
âTanya, leave him alone. Youâre wasting your time. He isnât interested.â
Just then, I noticed that the guy seemed to be saying good night.
âMaurice, quick! Go talk to him. Heâs leaving,â I said.
âCome on, Tanya! Stop!â
âIâll bet you a thousand bucks that you canât get his phone number.â
âWhat!â Maurice laughed. âYou canât be serious.â
âYou heard me.â
He took the bet and caught the guy at the door. Maurice grabbed his shoulder and whispered something in his ear while pointing at me. The pretty boy quickly stopped in his tracks and turned to look at me, his eyes suddenly widening with interest. I started nodding along to whatever Maurice was saying in his ear. Then he took the pen and paper Maurice held in his hand and wrote something down. When he was done, Maurice gave him dap, and the guy walked out of the club.
Moments later, Maurice, now beaming, returned waving the slip of paper.
âHereâs the number!â he said. âAnd I gave him yours. So, whereâs my thousand dollars?â
âHow did you convince him?â I asked.
