“War will come.

Pain and death are in her future,

But she will prevail.

Only her blood,

her strength will save us all.

Nations will rise on her eighteenth birthday.

Only she can calm the storm.

Her bloodline will prosper.

All creatures will love her.

The Kingdom will flourish in her care.

Only she can rule for man to have a future,

for all to join together.”

“It’s four months from now. I don’t understand, though. Why would McClintock start a war on her eighteenth birthday?” I asked.

“That is part of the visions and prophecy we never understood. At first we assumed it was all about McClintock. However, things slowly began to change. The Fae started losing their magic and the Kingdom went into decline. Plants, animals… everything is slowly dying.”

Griffin sat in a chair across from my cot and rested his elbows on his knees. “The soldier you killed out there was not technically a soldier, Xander. He was a Fae, possessed by some form of dark magic. Somehow McClintock, with Tabor’s help or perhaps someone or something else, is using an extreme amount of magic to create an army out of otherwise innocent creatures.”

“Possessed?” The thought of killing an otherwise innocent Fae made me furious. “Did he even know what he was doing? Could he have been helped?”

“Do not feel guilty, Xander. We have yet to contain one long enough to help them. Whatever happened to them - it is stronger than anything we can combat.”

“That’s some extremely strong magic. How do we fight it?”

“We do not know. The best answer we have is to make sure Skye takes her rightful place as Queen. We trust the prophecy.”

“What does this have to do with me and my abilities? Where do I fit in as her Guardian?” I asked hesitantly, almost afraid to know the answer. Hearing that Skye had been tampered with made me wonder what else had been manipulated.

Griffin hesitated before answering. “You are so much more than just her Guardian, Xander. You see, when the Fae saw the future, they also saw the unbreakable bond you and Skye would come to have, and they formulated a plan. We agreed that if you were to carry Fae and Elven blood, perhaps it would help bolster your abilities.”

He paused and looked at me like he was waiting for me to say something. “Go on,” I urged.

“These things have never been done before, Xander. To mix our blood with humans… it is something very few even know about. It would be extremely dangerous to our races if this information was to get into the wrong hands. Could you imagine what someone could do with it?”

I understood the implications. The possibilities of making others stronger - immortal! I began to see another, more distressing picture in my head as I sat there.

“The feelings we have for each other, Skye and I? The extra sensitive connection - was it manipulated by you?”

“No, we did not manipulate either of you. It was already clear in the future the Fae foresaw. We already knew you two would be connected in a way no Guardian and royal had ever been connected.
