Chapter Twelve
Brendan Mackay had walked barely three or four steps before Alison rounded on Finn. âHow dare ye threaten my friends.â
âI dinna threaten yer friend. Tis noâ happy I am that he had his arms around ye. Ye are a married lass, and I will noâ permit another mon to handle ye.â
âHandle me? I doona believe I am hearing this.â She poked the arrogant oaf in his strong chest. âThe mon has been my friend since we were bairns; I hadnât seen him in a while.â
She studied him for a minute. âYe were jealous.â
He flushed and sucked in a deep breath. âI am noâ jealous. Iâm just protecting what is mine.â
âProtecting what is yers? Am I merely a possession to ye, then? Like yer horse?â
By this time, Alisonâs âfriendâ had disappeared into the bakerâs store. Finn took her elbow and marched her forward. âI could use an ale.â
Just to show her independence, she would love to deny him, but she was thirsty herself. âVerra well. But Iâm noâ going for an ale because ye ordered it.â
The man had the nerve to smirk.
They settled at a table near the back of the room. Alison traced a small circle on the table while they waited for their drinks. âYe seemed to look around the room and then took this table all the way in the back. Why is that?â she asked.
Finn leaned back and crossed his arms over his chest. ââTis safer at the back of the room. I prefer to watch whatâs going on and who is coming and going. Now lass, Iâm giving ye a suggestion, noâ an order. Neâer turn yer back on the door.
âAlso check where back doors and windows are so ye can escape quickly if ye need to.â
She decided if they were to have a peaceful marriage, she would have to make some concessions and so would he.
She took a sip of her ale and studied him. ââTis a good idea. I can see the wisdom in it.â After a moment, she asked, âWhy are ye so determined to control everyone?â
His eyes narrowed. âAre ye referring to yer âfriend?ââ He shook his head. âIâm noâ wanting to control everyone. I just doona want another mon holding ye in his arms.â
She laughed, then sighed. âHe wasna holding me in his arms, we were hugging each other, which is what old friends do. But with ye arrogant ways, ye probably doona have friends to ken this.â
He grinned. âI have plenty of friends, but we doona go around hugging each other like a bunch of lasses.â
Finn took a sip of his ale. âWhy are ye so determined to put yerself in danger?â
Apparently it was now Finnâs turn to ask questions. Of course heâd never answered hers, though.
âI am noâ putting myself in dangerâ ââ
âDoona start off yer answer that way.â He paused for a moment. âLet me change my question. Why are ye careless about yer safety? Riding outside the castle walls alone is dangerous for a womanâeven a monâwhen it would take verra little effort to ask for someone to ride with ye.
