Chapter Nineteen

Natalie peeked through the front door of her house, feeling a bit like a teenager trying to sneak past her parents without it being discovered that she'd been out partying all night long.

It was just before seven o'clock. The house was quiet; each creak of the floorboards sounded impossibly loud. Todd usually stayed up late gaming and wouldn't show his face until after ten or eleven at the earliest. She could just slip inside and shower and clean herself up and-

“Hi, hon.”

She froze. Todd's voice came from the darkness further in the house. She looked up and saw him sitting in the doorway, his hands around his knees and bags under his eyes.

Natalie was all too aware of how she looked right now. Her tight fishnet stockings had been torn when either she or Jordan – she wasn't sure which – had ripped them desperately off in the back of the car. Her skirt was askew and the top button of her little tube-top had popped off, revealing even more of her cleavage than had already been displayed. Her mascara was running, her lipstick was smeared and her hair was a fright.

She looked, more or less, like she'd spent the whole night fucking wildly in the backseat of someone's car.

“Hello, Todd.”

“Where have you been?”

She thought about how she could answer that. She hardly felt she could tell him that she'd gone to a secret gangster-ridden party in the slums and almost been killed in a hail of gunfire, then spent the whole night screwing her client's brother in the backseat of his car. It would probably raise a good many more questions than it would answer.

“I was out,” she said lamely.

He sighed, shaking his head back and forth. “I was worried.”

“I'm sorry,” she said, taking a step closer, “I should have called, I know that. I didn't mean to worry you, I just... I guess I didn't really think... you'd care...” She felt a pang inside at the words, and a lump in her throat.

She'd never said anything like that before, never even thought it. Now that she had, however, she knew that it was true. She didn't think he cared. She hadn't even thought he would notice, to be honest, figured he'd be too plugged into his digital universe to register her absence.

“How can you say that?” he asked, his voice slightly hoarse.

She sighed. “Well, Todd, you haven't exactly been engaged in our marriage, lately, you know? I hardly see you anymore, and when I do it's like you're not even there in the room.”

“That's not fair...”

“Isn't it? It's been years, Todd. I feel like we hardly even know one another anymore.”

He took a deep breath, rubbing at his eyes with the backs of his hands. “Yeah... that's not totally my fault though. You've been so focused, so consumed by the work... There's no room for me anymore.”

She scoffed. “Oh, come on, Todd! I didn't have a choice. You put it on me, okay? I have to work, because you aren't going to.
