“Here you go again,” said Zerenia as Titus fastened his sword-belt and packed a few necessities into a saddlebag. “Do you really have to take a weapon?”

“That depends,” said Titus, watching her. “What do you know of Azhar?”

She blanched. “I know he was here, the men spoke of it. What’s going on?”

“So you know him? In which case, you’ll know that he is a complete goat’s turd.”

“Yes he is,” she replied. “So whatever it is he expects of you, be careful.”

“He has locked up Crispus and is threatening to murder him. He’s got a shock coming.”

“That’s precisely the problem with you, Titus Villius. You think violence is the answer to everything.”

“It seems to work.”

“Only for soldiers. Try using your brain once in a while.”

Titus smiled at her. “You know, I now realise that I should never have left Sicilia. You have a way about you, and yes, talking is sometimes good. It would have helped enormously before Philippi, but these Roman generals would rather shed blood than talk and I followed them to Tartarus and back. But somehow I don’t think Azhar is very good with gentlemanly conversations, so I will have my sword at the ready.”

“Can’t you take someone with you? Someone to watch your back?”

“I’m beginning to think you care,” he said, and risked taking her in a loving embrace. She melted, and let him kiss her. “I’ll be back before you can say ‘Gaia, Marcia and Smudge’!”

“Don’t come back in a box.”
