PART TWO

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

KENNARD

ONE YEAR LATER

“You Did What You Had To Do”

“I got it anyway and you’re gonna take it whether you want to or not,” Kennard said as he walked to his car with a white prescription bag clutched in his free hand. When he reached the car he ended the call and tossed his cell in the small compartment by the steering wheel. Tristan was in the passenger seat waiting on him.

When he arrived, Tristan immediately noticed Kennard’s stiff demeanor and said, “Sir, is everything okay?” He removed a rubber band from his arm and tamed his wild curly hair.

Kennard sighed. “Your mother’s getting worse, son. We have to keep an eye on her.”

Tristan nodded and leaned back. “I wish there was something I could do. It’s like she hates everything now. Mainly me. I don’t recognize her.”

Kennard sighed. “Let me handle your mother, son. I don’t want extra pressure on you. Don’t worry, I have it under control.”

Since Emma was murdered Zoe’s life spiraled out of control. After hearing the news that her only daughter was killed she suffered a stroke, which rendered the right side of her face in a permanent slump. Although the girls said it was an accident and Valla believed them, Zoe wasn’t too convinced. And to get back at the girls Zoe tortured them in ways most would consider unimaginable.

She had become evil.

Kennard felt the pressure of her new mood but it was Tristan who did his best to make things easier. As horrible as she acted he was in love…still.

Tristan cooked when Zoe didn’t. He cleaned when Zoe couldn’t and he expressed his love to her on a repeated basis. But nothing worked. She moved as if she hated him.

Out of Zoe’s sons, Kennard liked him the most. His decision was easy to understand. Clayton was lazy and untrustworthy and Zoe allowed it. With losing Emma she was determined that nothing would happen to him. But with Tristan she didn’t seem to care about his fate.

Kennard pulled into traffic. “I just want you to know that what you’re seeing, with the girls in the basement ain’t the way shit is supposed to be.” He looked over at him and gazed back at the highway. “You understand that don’t you?” He paused. “Treating people that way is wrong, son.”

“I understand, sir.” He nodded. “I really do.”

Kennard shook his head in disgust thinking about the slavery. “I fucked up by letting my sister rope us into this shit but I have a few things in the works. So it’s just a matter of time.”

“Anything I can do, sir?”

Kennard sighed again. “What is your mother’s thing with you? There’s a disconnection that I’m not understanding. You can talk to me, son. I’m willing to listen.”

Tristan knew if he wanted to have a serious relationship with him he would have to tell him that he had been with boys, even though he was not acting on the urge anymore. The saddest part was that the urge grew stronger as the months went by.
