CHAPTER 24

Mount Vernon was one of the most notable neighborhoods in Baltimore, because it contained just about all the culture of this particular city. Though some would argue that point, it cannot be denied that the museums, the art galleries, the schools of art and some of the most beautiful Federal architecture filled the area. Not four blocks away in any direction, one could find the slum of ones’ choice but in that ten or so blocks, one could see a veritable heaven for raising children and higher learning.

And a naked, very dead, young lady.

Compared to the other bodies, she was almost in the open, right across the street, in fact, from the Gay club where the last body had been found. There, the alleyway continued but was wide open on that end because of a parking lot that faced the club. Someone had seen her legs sticking out into the open section of the alley and called it in. Unlike the other bodies they had seen recently, this young woman of eighteen years had been severely beaten. It seemed there was not a part of her body that had not been hit with something hard and heavy.

The wounds were vicious.

As Al and Brenda got out of his mustang, one of the evidence techs pulled them aside.

“This looks like some other guy,” he said, as he led them into the partially open space.

“Guy must get off on hurting people. Nothing like the others we’ve seen.”

“How long she been layin’ here?” Al asked, squatting down to look her over.

“We know from lividity that she died on her stomach, just like you see here. She’s been dead about fourteen hours, near as I can tell. We’ll have to get her back to the lab to know for sure.”

Brenda stepped forward and looked down at the body. The corpse had a glorious head of dark hair. Brenda was afraid to get too close, knowing what the scene might do to her, but she had seen something on the girls’ right buttock. She leaned in closer and could make out a small letter “J” apparently carved there with something sharp. A feeling of deja vu slithered through her mind but she couldn’t connect it with anything.

“Can we turn her over?”

“Sure, no problem. We got all we’re gonna get until she’s in the lab.”

“Help me, Al,” she said with a growing sense of foreboding. Why she felt fearful, she didn’t know but there was something wrong here that she couldn’t lay hold of. She hadn’t blacked out and done her dog and pony show, and that was a relief, but she was afraid of this crime scene as she’d never been of any other.

Together, they turned her stiffened body onto its back.

Her mouth stretched into a rictus that contained, perhaps, the most ridiculous and frightening thing Brenda had ever seen.

She was wearing a pair of gold fangs.

Brenda, involuntarily, backed up a bit, then, she moved in to look at the girl’s mouth more closely. She
