William thrust himself more deeply into the redheaded maidservant moaning beneath him, her fleshy legs wrapped around his hips to hold him tight.

He had plowed her well and often since Roger had left on the king’s misguided mission, and with each passing day he felt more certain that his deep-seated ambition would soon be realized.

Laird William Douglas—aye, that title had a fine ring to it.

Roger was surely dead by now and his infant son grown sicker, though the bairn clung to life as if stubbornly refusing to die, much to William’s disgust. If not for the two nursemaids who practically lived in the boy’s bedchamber, taking shifts with him day and night, he would have smothered him with a pillow by now and no one would have been the wiser—

“Och, God, get up, wench!” Feeling himself grow soft at the mutinous thoughts roiling in his head, William rolled over onto his back so the plump young woman could straddle him, her heavy breasts hanging in his face.

Usually such a succulent sight would have made him hard as a rock again—and they were coupling on Roger’s four-poster bed, too, in his own bedchamber, which had given William perverse satisfaction up until now. He took a hardened nipple between his teeth and bit down, the maidservant crying out as she pumped up and down upon him, but even that didn’t rouse his lower body enough to continue.

“What is it?”

“Laird Douglas has returned home!” came a panicked voice, William launching himself out of the bed to throw open the door.

He stared incredulously at Benedict, the gray-haired steward wringing his bony hands and glancing beyond William to the maidservant scrambling to cover her breasts with the sheet.

“Are you certain, man?”

He received only a flush-faced nod, though it was enough to make William curse again so vehemently that the steward gasped and the maidservant jumped squealing from the bed to fetch her clothing.

“You!” William yelled at her, going to grab his clothes as well. “See that the room is made right with fresh bedding—at once! As for you…”—he glared over his shoulder at the wide-eyed steward—“say nothing of anything you’ve seen or I will strangle you, I vow it!”

His heart thundering as incredulity swelled inside of him, William yanked his tunic over his head and hurried to don his breacan, sword belt, and boots before striding from the bedchamber.

It couldn’t be true, he wouldn’t believe it until he saw Roger with his own eyes!

If the delegation had made it to York, it was still too soon to have returned from so great a distance—or was it?

He couldn’t think straight, his throat tight with choking disappointment as he bounded down the tower steps, only to nearly crash into Evander, who must have just run from the chapel.

“Did you hear the news? Roger has just ridden into the bailey! My
