Darcy

The wind had whipped the hat from his head, yet Darcy did not care, nor could he feel the cold. Faster, he mentally commanded his steed, bending low over the horse’s back and urging the stallion deeper into the woods.

He had felt an unease all night, after his encounter with Elizabeth in the library. Unable to sleep, he had been up and dressed at dawn, pacing his rooms. He had told himself he would speak with her at breakfast…

And then she never appeared.

Bingley and his sisters had looked at him as if he’d lost his mind, but Darcy had demanded that a maid go check on Miss Elizabeth. When the maid returned and reported that the young woman was not in her chambers, nor with her sister, Darcy had taken action.

He knew she had left Netherfield.

He knew she had left him.

“Darcy!” Bingley shouted from somewhere far behind him. “You’re going toward the river. Don’t you think she would have gone north towards…”

Darcy grit his teeth and raced even faster, Bingley’s words lost to the wind. But he knew what his friend meant. Elizabeth’s home, Longbourn, was slightly north of here, but he had the urge to keep riding east. Bingley and the ten men Darcy had wrangled to ride with them would follow his lead. Something told him to go this way. It was more than just her scent, which he picked up here and there as his mount raced toward a worn dirt path in the distance.

It was…her.

It was almost as if he could hear her in his mind, sense her in his heart.

His soul.

He had told Elizabeth about alphas and omegas. He had told her they were real, but then offered nothing beyond that cursory vocabulary lesson. He cursed himself as his horse leapt cleanly over a fallen tree. Yes, he had given her the barest of explanations—being more intent upon baring her body to his greedy gaze.

Fool! Arrogant, prideful fool.

He had thought that her body would guide her. That she wouldn’t question his leadership, once he soothed her with his touch. Wasn’t that what all the alphas he knew said?

Something very much like his mother’s voice echoed in his mind: Perhaps you should have asked an omega how she would like to be treated.

Darcy closed his eyes for one moment and groaned. Elizabeth had moved against him, with him, writhing on his lap, her pink lips parted, speaking in breathless whispers. She had wanted him.

And he desired her like no other.

He had already sent for a special license. He had already written to his staff at Pemberley and told them to prepare for his new bride. He had fallen under her spell long before he’d discovered she was an omega.

If only he had courted her. Instead, he had hoped the heat between them would burn into flames, and then…

What?

He supposed he expected a happily ever after, like the “fairy tales” she’d told him she read.

But it hadn’t worked like that. He growled, pulling on the reins and stopping to scent the air.
