Chapter Nine

Ren wasn’t an informant? Then whom was he spying on? And why would he have all that spy gear in his closet? What would be the motive for someone to kill him, if she wasn’t spying on them?

I didn’t understand how Ren was involved, or why Seth had called me that day and told me that he was an informant. Had someone been leading Seth on? Trying to throw me off of a more important case?

Things weren’t adding up. Not in the slightest.

“Detective, are you all right? You look slightly ill.” Agent Starburns leaned forward, his brows knitted together. Unlike Garcia, he actually sounded and looked concerned for me. Maybe he thought I was about to pass out from dehydration considering that it was practically as hot as a sauna in the room.

“Fine, just confused.” I cleared my throat, trying to appear more together. “I understand that informants have rights but is there any way you can share this particular informant’s identity with me? It might help settle things for me.”

“We can’t do that. You’re not authorized for such information, and we’ve bent the rules enough for you,” Garcia said. For once, Starburns looked exasperated with his partner’s bluntness. The lead agent came to stand.

“Garcia could use a bit of tact, but he is right. We can’t share the informant's identity with you.”

“Why not? I’m part of your force now, and this could be a really important part of my case. If Sabine was the handler I might even need to question the person.”

Although I’d known that the ask was going to be a lot, I found myself getting angry at their dismissal. This felt exactly like a replay of a few days ago, when I was working on Ren's case. I was allowed information but only so much. And the amount I’d been privy to hadn’t been enough to make sense of anything.

Why was the universe working against me? Did it not want these cases to be solved? Or more realistically, did someone who was high up in the shadow force not want the case to be solved? If so, what was their motive?

“We cannot share that information because the informant is still operable and in the field,” Starburns explained, smoothly and calmly. “They could bring in more information. Blowing their cover, however, particularly by involving you, who many in the Walker pack seem to know, would be a terrible idea.”

This was such a crock. My fire magic agreed. It began to simmer within me, heating me up even more. I wiped a bead of sweat off my face. From my peripheral vision, I noticed that Garcia too had started sweating more too. I sniffed the air and wrinkled my nose. The small room was starting to smell less fresh, and more like body odor, and I was partly to blame.

My fire magic was raising the room's temperature extraordinarily. That didn’t happen often, but when it did, it was because my magic felt particularly angry. It was the magic’s way of performing a sneak attack.
