I went to the window; there was nothing on the sill. If a handkerchief had been there I should have seen it. Mlle Gremond did not point out any handkerchief to me while I was in the room … I did not shut the window. I do not think the room was in confusion.

Lance-Corporal Adams’ testimony broadly corroborated Waugh’s version of events: he did not see a sheet dangling from an open window as they entered the lodgings, nor did he hear any noises emanating from the room before breaking down the door. He agreed that there had been little opportunity to conduct a detailed examination during the five minutes he had spent in the room before being called away by Waugh.

Adams also confirmed Sergeant Waugh’s recollection that the landlady had not shown them the khaki handkerchief: ‘I saw Mlle Gremond go to the window. She did not point out anything there to any of us.’ However, he did recall Virginie speaking to Waugh en route to the lodgings: ‘As we were approaching the house Mlle Gremond said something to the sergeant. I did not see her pointing.’

Under cross-examination by the court, Adams described the cavalier fashion in which the French and British police had behaved after breaking down the door. He confessed:
