Chapter 18

The night before her wedding, Elizabeth looked around the bedchamber of her youth. Her maid, Sarah, had packed all her possessions that she would take to Netherfield Park with her earlier in the day. The two trunks were transported there by the evening.

Her writing desk, where she wrote her letters to William while he was in London, was bare, as was her closet, save the dress she would wear in the morning when her dream would be realised as she joined William in holy matrimony.

The drawers in her dresser were empty; all that remained on that piece of furniture were her pearl-handled brush, her comb, and the hand mirror she had inherited from her late grandmother, Beth. That was her only regret, that her beloved Grandmama had not lived to see first Jane and then herself marry.

Sarah had assisted Elizabeth to prepare for bed. She was dressed in a light blue night rail with a hunter-green robe over it. Her maid had brushed out her hair and then plaited it, leaving a long plait of raven coloured hair running down her back. Elizabeth sat on her bed looking around her room with her legs pulled up underneath her. At least, Sarah would remain with her so she would have an addition reminder of her younger days at Longbourn.

There was a soft, expected knock on the bedchamber door. After calling out “enter” her mother did so and pushed the door closed behind her. “Welcome, Mama,” Elizabeth stated as she moved over to make room for her mother to sit next to her on the bed.

“Are you ready for your wonderful day tomorrow?” Rose asked her second daughter after she sat next to her on the bed and took Elizabeth’s hands in her own.

“Mama, as much as I am ready to marry William, something I have wanted since I fell in love with him nearly two years past, in a small measure I am sad,” Elizabeth owned. “It has naught to do with marrying William that engenders those feelings.”

“I know, Lizzy dearest, it is that everything changes for you on the morrow. I understand your feelings. No matter how much you love William, the sadness is for leaving the home and family who have been with you since you can remember,” Rose empathised. “You know the story of the attempted compromise which almost tore me and your father asunder, do you not?”

“Yes, Mama, I have heard of it,” Elizabeth replied tentatively, “I am confused as to how that relates to my situation. No evil woman tried to steal William away from me.”

“My point is this, Lizzy,” Rose explained, “even though I loved your father more than life itself and felt relief you will never grasp when he was freed from the machinations of that woman, I had similar feelings to yours the night before my wedding. What I am telling you is the feelings you are having are natural and just. They are felt by almost every bride, regardless of how much she loves, and is looking forward, to marrying her groom the next day.
