“Why did you have to get yourself so upset?” Ms. Landelton asked over an afternoon cup of tea at her home. Loletta hadn’t been out of the house since she returned from the hospital.

“I just found out my husband cheated on me and then had sex with that bitch and me together. I don’t know about you, but that made me sick.” Loletta blew down on her hot cup of coffee. She was wearing a black Juicy Couture sweatsuit. Her hair was undone, and her nails badly needed attention.

“I don’t want to see you lose yourself like this. Look at you,” Ms. Landelton said. “No wonder why—”

“Why what? My husband cheats?”

Ms. Landelton squeezed a bit of lemon into her tea. “Honey, you have to keep yourself up with these men.”

“Mommy, this is the first time my nails have looked like this in five years. I maintain myself at all times, but I just lost my babies. You and Kavon can get over it, but I can’t.”

“So what do you plan to do?”

Loletta wasn’t sure. Kavon had spent every one of the four nights she was in the hospital by her bedside. She had a celebrity suite, so there was an adjacent bedroom where Kavon slept. He pleaded with Loletta over and over to forgive him. He was just as upset as she was when the doctors revealed that she miscarried. He even promised to seek counseling.

“I plan to see what happens,” Loletta said to her mother. “Just don’t plan on me getting pregnant anytime soon. Not until Kavon and I get some serious counseling.”

“Baby, the doctor said you can be ready again in a few months. There’s no point of being married to a rich man if you’re not going to have kids.” Ms. Landelton’s lips wrinkled as she brought them to the rim of her cup.

“Can you think about what I want for a second? Can this not be about you?”

“It’s not about me. It’s about the family. You went ahead and got yourself all bothered, and look at what happened.”

“I can’t believe you’re blaming this on me,” Loletta said, although she blamed herself even more. “Kavon hit me. He threw me down those stairs intentionally. If I ever went to the police—”

“They’d think you were delirious. I’m sure he didn’t mean to. You act like he wanted to kill you.”

“It damn well looked like it.” Loletta inhaled the mint scent from the tea. She could feel a migraine descending on her. “But now he swears he’s changed. And unfortunately, I think I have, too.”

When Loletta returned home, Kavon had prepared a dinner for both of them under candlelight. She found a small black box on their bed with a red bow. It was an eight-carat purple diamond ring. She slipped it on without a blink.

The following day Loletta met with Lady Anise in her Upper East Side home. When Loletta entered the small, quiet room, Lady Anise was sitting in a rocking chair. “You didn’t listen,” she said, her eyes sad.
