LATER THAT EVENING, Warner had to go handle some stuff with the security company he ran and Gerard took the boys home, so Chichi had a rare opportunity of a child-free evening. She came over to my place and we were going to just have a girl’s night, gabbing and eating and watching whatever Chichi wanted to watch.

“I’m telling you, I’m not trying to hear anything about that Disney Plus stuff tonight,” she warned me, strolling barefoot from my kitchen with two bottles of tequila. “I wanna see something with some cussing and sex in it, since I almost never get to watch that kind of stuff at home.”

“Fine, I’ll let you control the remote. But I don’t know what you’re doing with all that tequila. You do still have to go home after this.”

“I know this. But I haven’t had any in too long.”

“It’ll be just wine for me. I’m not trying to mess with that.”

“Damn, when did you get to be such a lightweight? We used to drink way harder stuff than this back in the day.”

“Which is exactly how I know I don’t want it now,” I concluded, playfully nudging her aside as I reached for my iPad on the end table. “You wanna order a pizza?”

“Ugh, no, I eat enough of that at home with those boys and Gerard. They’d eat that shit every day, if I let ‘em. Let’s get Chinese.”

“Works for me.” I was just about to look for somewhere to place the order when my phone rang. “Shoot, I left my phone in my purse...”

Chichi peered at my iPad. “Can’t calls come through on there?”

“I turned that feature off.”

“Hmph. If that’s Warner saying he finished his work earlier than he thought and wants to come over so y’all can make out some more, tell him too bad. You’re hanging with your girl tonight.”

I laughed and sucked my teeth as I retrieved my phone from my purse. “Yeah, yeah. It’s not Warner, anyway; it’s Giselle.” I answered the call. “Hey, girl.”

“Hey, Claire,” Giselle sniffed. “You busy?”

“No, not really...you okay?”

“I’m not. Forrest and I split up.”

“What??” I gasped. Chichi stopped scrolling through Netflix and looked at me curiously. “What happened? You’re getting a divorce?”

“No, no; at least, not yet. I just told him to get out and stay somewhere else ‘cause I couldn’t stand the sight of him after I found out the truth.”

“Oh no...please don’t tell me he cheated.”

“I actually might have been less insulted if that’s all it was. I found out the main reason he married me is because I’m biracial and could give him ‘pretty-haired babies.’”

My jaw dropped. “Are you serious? He actually told you that??”

“He didn’t but Montrel did.”

My face automatically tightened. Why did his name always have to come up? “Oh.”

“I’m sorry to keep calling you with all my drama,” Giselle said. “I know you probably get tired of hearing about me and Forrest’s crap.”

“Stop apologizing. That’s what friends are for.”

“I appreciate it. A friend is what I need right now.
