Chapter Twelve

Ryan headed his truck toward Mike Traynor’s cabin, but slowed near the turnoff. “Someone else has been up this way recently,” he said, pointing ahead to the tracks in the snow. “Maybe they were headed to another cabin? Maybe we should follow them.”

“OK.” Deni leaned forward in her seat. “The road doesn’t look too bad—like someone cleared it recently.”

“That’s a good indicator someone is living up this way.” Ryan started forward again, moving slowly and trying to stay in the tracks of the person who had gone before them. Though the road had been plowed sometime since the last big storm, the snow was probably soft on the edges and he didn’t want to get stuck.

They had traveled about a quarter mile when he caught a flash of pink by the side of the road. “That surveyor’s tape looks pretty new,” Deni said.

As they drew nearer, they could see the tape was marking the entry into a driveway. Sure enough, the tracks they had been following turned in there. Ryan followed them, hoping he wasn’t getting into someplace he couldn’t get out of easily.

Unlike Mike Traynor’s place, which could be reached only by snowmobile or on foot in winter, this drive was cleared all the way to the dwelling at the end of it—not a cabin, but a yurt, with green canvas sides, smoke puffing from a black pipe protruding from the roof.

Ryan hadn’t even shut off the engine of the truck when a man appeared in the door of the yurt. He was stocky, of average height, clean-shaven, with a black watch cap pulled down over his ears. He watched as Ryan and Deni got out of the truck and walked toward him. “Hello,” Deni called. “This is a beautiful place you’ve got here. Do you like living in a yurt?”

“What can I do for you?” The man wasn’t unfriendly, but he seemed wary. Or maybe shy.

“I’m Mike Traynor’s daughter, Deni.” Deni offered a warm smile. “I don’t know if you’ve met my dad, but he’s probably your closest neighbor.” She gestured in the direction of Mike’s cabin. “I was wondering if you’ve seen him recently.”

“I guess I’ve seen him around, but I don’t know him,” the man said. “But I pretty much keep to myself.”

“When was the last time you saw my dad?” Deni asked.

“Couldn’t say.”

“What’s your name?” Ryan asked. “I’m Ryan, by the way.”

The man’s expression remained impassive. “My name’s not important,” he said.

Ryan was taken aback. How could he counter that?

“Dad’s been missing a couple of weeks,” Deni said. “I’m really worried about him.”

“Sorry, I can’t help you.” The man turned and went back inside, the door closing softly behind him.

Deni and Ryan looked at each other. “I guess we’d better go,” he said.

Neither of them said anything until they were in the truck and out of the driveway. “He certainly wasn’t very friendly,” Deni said.

“He didn’t look like Glenda described Alex,” Ryan said.

“We still need to talk to Rouster again about Al.” She leaned her head back and closed her eyes.
