Chapter 14

It was time to go out to the party, and Jane was in her bedroom trying to decide what to wear. After what happened last night, and the cold shoulder she’d received from Wyatt all morning, she really didn’t want to go. Not feeling in a partying or celebratory mood, she decided on a t-shirt, jeans, and her cowboy boots. One good thing, the temperature had risen to the mid-forties, and the threat of snow had passed. She threw her leather on and made her way to the kitchen. She caught Dolly as she was leaving the kitchen.

“Do you need any help?”

“Yes, could you bring the last of the pies? Everything else is out to the barn. They’re in the box on the island.”

Jane picked up the box, and was surprised by how heavy it was. As she turned, she bumped into someone and looked up, and was surprised to see Wyatt standing there. “Sorry,” she mumbled, and made to move around him, but he continued to block her way. Exasperated by him, she sighed, and demanded, “What the hell do you want from me, Wyatt? I’m doing my best to steer clear of you, but you seem to be in my face every time I turn around. Just leave me alone and I’ll leave you alone. As a matter of fact, I’ll go out of my way to avoid you.”

“Like you did last night when we got home? Sneaking off to bed before I got back from dropping Dolly and Wilson off, not to mention riding home with Dillon and the boys.”

“What does it matter? What we did was a mistake, never to be repeated, so you should feel good that I’m avoiding you. I know it sure the hell makes my life easier. Now if you would excuse me, I have to get these pies out to the barn.” She hurried around him and she heard him before she left the kitchen and actually shuddered, but she didn’t know if it was in fear or anticipation.

“This conversation isn’t over, Jane,” Wyatt said, and watched her leave the kitchen. He ran his hands through his hair and wanted to scream in frustration, but he came in for what he’d forgotten earlier, and waited until she had time to make it to the barn before leaving the house. It was two o’clock, the time the party was to start, and several of his friends and neighbors had been arriving since noon. What he was worried about was that George had just arrived, and Wyatt had overheard him tell some of his buddies that there was an available woman here. He had gone into the house with the intention to warn Jane about him, but she’d jumped down his throat and he couldn’t blame her, so he decided to stand back and see what would happen. But you could be damn sure he would be close by in case some other man tried to get too close to her.

Jane walked in with the box of pies, and hurried over to where Dolly was by the food table.
