Chapter Eighteen

An ache radiating from between my thighs pulled me from the best dream I’d had in forever. I groaned and rolled over, burying my face into Kyrian’s soft fur. Unfortunately, it was too late and I was awake, my bladder refusing to let me go back to sleep. It took a little bit of maneuvering to extract myself from Kyrian’s gripping paws without waking him, but eventually, I was able to step into the shower while my best friend slept on.

My moan as the hot water hit my skin echoed through the small bath, as memories of last night came over me. I had gone to Flare to hang out with the girls, only to be ditched as soon as they saw their mates. Colbie was the only other girl still single, but she was working and couldn’t keep me company. My evening of sitting at the bar, and feeling awkward over learning that Kyrian and Chester were most likely my mates, had been interrupted when some guy started flirting with me. Just as I was about to turn and tell him off, something about him caught my attention, something that had rang as familiar.

I was just about to place his face when a mournful howl came from my room. “NO! This isn’t fair! My curse was meant to be broken!” Poking my head from behind the shower curtain, I just barely caught Kyrian’s tail as he dashed past the open door. Somehow, after everything I had learned, Kyrian being able to talk like a human was the easiest to believe.

“Kyr? Lovebug? Is something wrong?” My concern was evident, but so was my humor as I giggled, watching the husky drama unfold.

“‘Something wrong’?! YES! Something is very wrong! I had thumbs last night! THUMBS!” He dashed into the room, a sorrowful rage burned in his eyes.

I ducked behind the curtain again, long enough to turn off the water and collect my thoughts without laughing. “You know, when I was talking with the girls yesterday, they mentioned that the main reason Chester changed overnight was that he wasn’t used to holding that form while he slept. So, have you tried to change back into a human again, or did you just wake up and howl?”

When I reached out to grab a towel, I could see the pout on Kyrian’s face. As predicted, he woke up and started howling. It was very much like what he used to do back when I first adopted him. Slowly, his features began to change as he closed his eyes.

Where Kyrian the husky once sat, now stood the handsome blonde from last night. I stepped out of the shower then, and took one of Kyrian’s hands in mine. “See, lovebug? Thumbs.” I placed a kiss on his thumb, before leaving him stunned and standing in the bathroom. “Now take a shower, you owe me brunch and answers.”

Once I’d dressed, I sat down at the dining table to think more about the change my life was taking.
