Chapter Eleven

The next day, I made my way carefully through the forest to the edge of town, then stuck closely to side streets to avoid being seen. Even while avoiding human eyes, I noticed the town was a lot quieter than usual. I didn’t hear nearly as much chatter in the streets. Random laughs, or even the occasional scream were both pretty normal, but things were eerily quiet. Hopefully, it meant that word had successfully got out to the majority of supernaturals and they were playing it safe for a day or so.

I spotted Erich standing in the middle of the bridge, looking over the edge at Starlight River and the tumbling rapids of Moonlit Falls as they made their way towards the center of town, and waved him over to me. It was better for me to stay with my back to the buildings for now.

“Hey, Aggy, you okay?”

“Yep, I’m so glad we agreed to meet close to noon today. I think yesterday exhausted me way more than I realized. I slept like the dead. But more importantly, how are you? Are you coping with things okay? I’m a little surprised you managed to get the day off work.”

Erich nodded and fiddled with the strap of his backpack. His expression was unsure. He was biting a little on the inside of his cheek, which didn’t exactly fill me with confidence, but he forced a smile. “Yeah, work was fine with me taking some vacation time. Getting home yesterday was an experience, though. I wouldn’t have thought that Spinel had a horn, that was a bit of a shock.”

I chuckled to myself. “Yep, she’s a unicorn. Like a legit unicorn. Even I was surprised when I saw her. I was always taught in school that they were only native to Scotland, but here she is. I guess my teacher didn’t get out of the valley much.”

“You were taught that in school? So, wait, are there supernatural schools?”

“That’s right. Mine was a little different, though. I went to a Fae-only school from Primary years all the way up to what you’d call High School. Maeve’s school had a whole bunch of different supes, which is why our schools were paired together for a pen-pal project.”

“I remember you mentioned that before, but knowing the magic behind it makes even more sense now.” He took a deep breath and looked back towards the river from where we were standing. “It’s strange. Things are crazier than ever for me now, but the things around me are also making a crazy amount of sense. Is that weird?”

I shook my head and adjusted the tote bag on my shoulder. “No, your eyes are just open now. It’s like high-definition television, only the details you were missing were magic.”

“That’s a good way to put it. It’s just going to take some getting used to. I’m trying not to stare at people that I’ve known for my whole life like they’re entirely new people. I know they’re the same inside, like you are.
