Teachers I spoke with said they had a hard time adjusting to some aspects of the Costa Rican classroom. The biggest was noise level and a certain lack of respect for the teacher. “Kids will talk away while you’re trying to give your lecture,” says one teacher. “And the culture here is to just let them.”

Starting a Business

With a stable political environment, an educated workforce, and few limits on foreign control of corporations, Costa Rica is a good place for foreign residents to do business. Costa Rica considers that it protects itself against exploitation by protecting its workforce. Labor laws are strict and well enforced. The government makes it easy for foreigners to do business here in part because it wants more jobs created for Ticos.

For a few specific kinds of enterprise there are further incentives, which include tax exemptions that can last for more than a decade. You’ll need an experienced and up-to-date lawyer to tell you which of the many incentive programs you might qualify for and to guide you through applying for them.

If your company qualifies for Free Zone (export processing zone) incentives, your company may be able to receive exemptions on import duties on raw materials or components, on export taxes, and on taxes. If your company relates to tourism or reforestation, there are other incentives to be had, and some investments may even qualify you for residency.
