Chapter Fourteen

He sat on the porch nursing his coffee as he waited for her to come downstairs so they could start their day. He was still no closer to ending Salvatore than he was a week ago.

He’d slept only a few hours last night and although he was used to never getting enough sleep, this time it was for different reasons.

After sitting with her last night, he’d gone to bed and tossed and turned, disgruntled by the turn of events. He didn’t like feeling out of sorts. He’d had a few girlfriends over the years and thought he’d been in love with his last. Turned out, she wasn’t cut out for life with a military man. When his contract was up, he’d had a momentary thought to contact Bella, see what she was up to, but if she couldn’t handle the way things were back when he was across the pond, then she certainly wouldn’t be able to handle his chaotic life now.

So, here he was going through life alone.

Something Meadow had said last night struck him in the center of his chest.

She’d said they had to rely on each other.

That was a huge feat for a man like Crayce. Sure, he relied on his team. They had his six and he had theirs, but this was different. Meadow was a woman, and she came with drama. Salvatore drama. She said she could handle feeding him to the wolves, but from experience, Crayce knew having blood on one’s hands wasn’t a walk in the park. He’d done a lot of things over the last five years since Monster Saint was created. He’d hunted down criminals, sometimes to take them in for debriefing and other times things hadn’t ended well. But Crayce had learned early on, he was in the job of saving innocent lives and sometimes that meant taking out the poison from the mainstream.

Salvatore had notches on his arm, literally, of all the deaths he’d been responsible for. He didn’t have a compassionate bone in his body which made him a dangerous criminal. He’d been on the Feds’ radar for years, and every time they got close to nailing him, evidence disappeared, or a witness ended up missing or worse. So, for Meadow to be alive and talking meant she was either smart or Salvatore had a fascination with the beautiful woman.

Crayce would vote that it was probably the later.

And he could see why.

She wasn’t the typical woman. He found her…intriguing. Most women who were on the run from a monster would be a nervous wreck, but no, she was a fighter. A survivor. She was determined to get out from under Salvatore’s thumb no matter the consequences.

Tired of waiting for her, he pushed out of the rocker and went inside the house, making his way upstairs and down the hall with purpose.

He raised his hand and knocked, but the door must not have been latched because it opened. In his line of sight was Meadow, lying in bed, with the sheet tossed over her hip.
