Thelma’s response to my description of her was to turn beat red and put her headphones on. I realized I might have royally screwed up and decided it was best if we didn’t talk right away. Maybe she’d just forget I said anything and let us get back to the way things were before our little conversation.

A little bit later, Lena arrived, dressed professionally in a light grey woolen dress. The dress hugged her figure and I couldn’t help myself when she walked into the office.

“Holy cow, Lena,” I said. “You look amazing.”

“Aw, you flatter me,” she said. “I feel like it draws attention to my big backside. Tell me the truth, Thelma. Too much?”

“No, you look really good, Lena,” Thelma said, apparently talking to Lena if not me.

“Well, we’re hunting wabbits today. We need to look the part,” she said.

“Wabbits?”

“Backwards metaphor,” she said. “I’m Elmer Fudd’s wabbit, but I think the phrase is funny and we’re hunting hardware designers, which isn’t as funny as saying wabbits.”

“Oh, haha, okay,” I said.

“Hey, good luck today, right Jace?” Thelma said.

“Got my lucky wabbit’s foot. What could go wrong?”

Thelma smiled and slipped her headphones back on. Apparently, we were okay.

“Try this on?” Lena asked, handing me a dark blue blazer.

Lena fussed with the fit but seemed satisfied. “Well, not perfect, but I know what needs fixing. Good enough for today. Okay, put this cream shirt on, you don’t have to tuck it in.”

I wasn’t about to argue with her. She knew how she wanted me to be portrayed, I was okay with her dressing me up. I imagined at some point, I’d care, but I wasn’t there yet. I caught Thelma looking at me as I pulled off my t-shirt. She saw me catch her and looked away, embarrassed. I didn’t mind giving her a show if that’s what she liked. Not like she couldn’t see my chest if we went swimming or something like that.

“Are we ready?” Shiva asked. “We’ll be a couple of minutes early but I know that Ciro’s will have your table open, so you won’t be waiting.”

“Might as well go,” Lena said, hooking her hand into my arm and following Shiva out to the car, swaying her hips a bit more than usual.

“You smell good, Lena,” I said, holding the door open for her. Shiva would have preferred that I climb into the car, first. But since I wasn’t the type to do that, she didn’t mind me being chivalrous. What she didn’t want to do was be distracted by opening the door for me, which was good, because I wasn’t going for that.

“When I pull up, let me negotiate with the valet before you get out,” Shiva said.

Lena gave me a raised eyebrow, but I cut her off from objecting. If I’d learned one thing, it was that Shiva didn’t like to be questioned on security matters. “Copy that, Shiva,” I said.

There’s something pretty cool about stepping out of a nice car, in front of a nice restaurant, dressed in good clothing, and having a pretty woman on your arm.
