Chapter Five
Three knocks on the door, then three more knocks, and he was in.
âBonsoir, Monsieur Achilles,â the hostess greeted him smoothly. Cantor only nodded. No need to show an invitation this time. He felt restless, his body full of nervous energy. The whole day had been a wash. From the moment Max walked out of his house, Cantor had bided his time until he could come to the club. Max was not as bold as X was. Also, Cantor suspected the man truly believed that the only side of him worth keeping was the one that came out at LÃ -Bas. The way heâd held on to Cantor that morning, the need in him, the yearning to be cherished, all was palpable. But the moment they got close, Max ran. Cantor knew whyâheâd been tossed aside before. They had made him to feel that what he needed was too much to ask.
For this to work, he would have to clarify that as addictive as X had been from the first taste, Cantor was equally drawn to the shy aristocrat who labored as an engineer. The widower who, years after his loverâs passing, still carried such raw, naked grief for his beloved. The man who wanted, no, deserved someone who could treasure every part of him.
âMonsieur,â the hostess called to him, and he realized heâd been standing there without saying a word.
âPardon,â he answered, bringing himself back to the moment.
âIs this good for you?â The woman asked, and now he was certain heâd entirely missed what sheâd said.
âSorry, what?â Cantor asked, embarrassed.
The hostess smiled. Perhaps his gob smacked state was more obvious than he thought.
âMonsieur X has requested your company this evening.â Cantorâs heart leaped. His skin thrumming with excitement, the nervous energy now of a completely different kind, a sun hot and bright and pulsing in his chest.
âIs he in the main room?â It impressed Cantor by how unaffected he sounded when there were tremors coursing through his body. How could Cantor, infamous bachelor, feel this much, this deeply for a man heâd only met weeks ago? How could he desire a lover who heâd had merely minutes with his intensely? He could scarcely understand what was happening to him. But it didnât make his feelings any less real.
âHeâs reserved a private room,â she explained. âWould you like to join him?â He could only nod.
âVery well,â the hostess said, and scribbled something on the ledger in front of her. âHeâs asked you remain masked, and he will do the same.â
More games, then.
They both knew who they were outside of here, and yet Max, X, wanted to maintain the pretense that they were strangers. He remembered his words from earlier that day, the certainty that Cantor would tire of Max, his belief that only X was desirable.
You need to earn his trust, and pushing for what you want when heâs not ready will destroy any chance of that.
âWhat room?â he asked, picking up a mask from the tray before handing it to the hostess and turning around.
