This regional process of premeditated and coordinated enslavement seems to correspond to concurrent practices within Scandinavia itself. The later ninth-century Vita Rimberti, for example, details the eponymous prelateâs encounter with a crowd of Christian slaves in Haithabu, some of whom are speculated to have hailed from the Carolingian kingdoms.142
VI.2 Encampment
No early medieval mariner would have been on the move indefinitely. As hunger, fatigue, illness, and low morale may have induced individuals to make landfall, so too would a more enveloping requirement for any hydrarchy to resupply and revitalise its respective craft and crews. Although liminal Scandinavian encampment may have already been commonplace around Carolingian Europe during the opening decades of the ninth century (see Section V.2), explicit references to these endeavours only first emerge during the early 840s. From that point onward, many such outposts were identified by contemporary authors, some of whom saw fit to disclose valuable details on size, layout, and intramural activity. Yet, despite these observations, few academic analyses of these fortified camps have thus far ventured beyond a cursory glance or comparative affirmation. As these sedentary ventures may prove to be essential in understanding the sustainability of the viking phenomenon in Francia, this section seeks to provide a methodical, in-depth look into their functional development.
