It underwrites Lily Briscoe’s final ‘vision’ in To the Lighthouse. She is trying to complete a picture which contains ‘Mrs Ramsay sitting on the step with James’. (But Mrs Ramsay, who is central to the first part of the novel, has died some time before.) Her subsequent ‘revelation’ about life is wonderfully poised between the nature of the object, the historical event, and the nature of art in giving it order. This is just what painting does, perhaps, but perhaps not, because she is not just thinking about her painting here:Heaven be praised for it, the problem of space remained, she thought, taking up her brush again. It glared at her. The whole mass of the picture was poised on that weight. Beautiful and bright it should be on the surface, feathery and evanescent, one colour melting into another like the colours on a butterfly’s wing; but beneath the fabric must be clamped together with bolts of iron.
