Chapter Thirty-Six

Finally, they arrived in Meryton. Elizabeth could not be restrained from gazing happily out her window and waving at passers-by, who merrily waved back. Mr. Darcy felt a little guilty; he had not considered how much she must miss this village, where she had been born and raised. To him, Meryton was a sleepy and insignificant little village; but it had been Elizabeth’s her entire world. He had been right, he congratulated himself, to bring her here to attend her sister’s wedding.

She had told him that they would stay at Netherfield. He had wondered at that. Why had she not wanted to stay at Longbourn, with her parents and her sisters? And even as he asked himself the question, he knew the answer: she had not wanted to expose him to her ill-behaved family members. He wished he had understood this sooner; he would have at least considered insisting that they stay at Longbourn. But it was too late to change it, he thought, as the carriage pulled up to the front door of Netherfield Park.

Bingley came out the front door, beaming from ear to ear. Not waiting for Mr. Darcy’s coachman to get down and open the carriage door, Bingley strode to the carriage and opened the door himself.

“Darcy!”

“Bingley!” In the manner of close friends who have not seen each other in some time, the two men pounded one another on the back.

Mr. Darcy turned and offered his hand first to Georgiana and then to Elizabeth. The two ladies shook out their skirts and curtsied; Bingley offered a correct bow. Then he grinned at Elizabeth. “And there is my new sister!”

“Indeed; you must call me Elizabeth!”

“And I am Charles!”

Mrs. Hurst now joined them. Curtsies and bows were exchanged. Bingley informed the Darcy party that Mrs. Hurst was now acting as his hostess.

“And Miss Bingley is gone, is she not?” Elizabeth asked her new brother, quietly. “I had heard that she would be living elsewhere.”

“She is still here; I am allowing her to stay for the wedding. But immediately after, she will be taken to our relatives in Scarborough. I could not ask Jane to live with Caroline, as my sister continued to be unpleasant to her. I suggested that she might live with the Hursts in London, but they refused to have her, so to Scarborough she must go.”

Elizabeth nodded. “Well done, Charles.”

He looked relieved. “I am glad you said so; I thought perhaps I had been too harsh.”

“Too harsh? No; if a gentleman must choose between his wife and his sister, he had much better choose his wife. The sister is destined to leave the family and make her home elsewhere, whereas the wife will be beside him for life.”

“Exactly my thinking!” he said.

Elizabeth thought it was more likely Jane’s thinking, but no matter.

Mr. Darcy had overheard the conversation, and he shook his head. If he had to choose between his wife and his sister, of course he would choose his sister. Of course he would! Wouldn’t he?

Mrs.
