Chapter 11:

Alyssa's father swore when she and Greg updated him. She didn't know whether to laugh or cry. He never swore, and she felt a strange sense of guilt for being the one to give him a reason to. She knew it wasn't her fault really, she was just the messenger, but what person wants to be the one that delivers the bad news to any family member, let alone a parent? He hadn't just sworn once, it was a long list of swear words, and she was just grateful that her mother hadn't been there to hear it. When he had appeared to have got it all out of his system, he sat at the chair in his office, and pushed it back from his desk slightly. Alyssa wondered for a brief moment if he was going to spin himself around on it. She had always found that doing it made her feel better, and thought that maybe he should try it.

"This confirms our fears," he started. "They must have supernaturals working with them. One of our people must have put the spell on the place. Greg, go and fetch Jai. I want his input."

Jai was one of the few elves that chose to live within the community, rather than with the other elves. He had always been fascinated by the other races, and spent his time learning as much as he could about them. He had been the one to produce the texts that the teachers now used in the classes. He was definitely the go-to guy with any questions you had. Greg returned after a few minutes, with Jai behind him.

"Greg's just given me the news. It sounds like a boundary spell, similar to the one in place here. Only this one keeps out supernaturals, rather than humans," Jai told them.

"Is there any way of undoing it?" Alyssa asked, but Jai shook his head.

"No. Spells like these are absolute. The only person who can undo it is the person who placed it there. There may be a loophole but it's not something I'd be able to determine myself."

"Who would?" asked Allan, his eyes brightening at the possibility of hope.

"Kalen may be able to. He's an elder with the southern group. But he won't leave the site, and the only way to contact him is to go there. He hasn't left in over a hundred years and there's no other way to contact him," Jai answered.

Alyssa stood and looked at Greg. "Road trip?" she asked, trying to hide the excitement in her voice.

"No way," Allan interjected. "It's not safe for anyone to leave at the moment."

Alyssa felt the sliver of excitement fizzle out, to be quickly replaced by disappointment. "But Dad," she started, trying not to whine. "We'll all go. Safety in numbers. Laura and I had plans to travel this summer, but with everything going on, we'll never get the chance. This is the closest we'll get!"

Jai sat up in his chair and looked at Allan. "It's the only way, Allan.
