CHAPTER 6

Aimee spread an afghan over the side of the table and attempted to display it to its best advantage for the third time that morning. The craft table her mother occupied at the far end of the rec hall where the craft show was being held consisted actually of three tables. Aimee’s blankets were perched on the table closest to the exit of the exhibition room. Farmers along with their cow or cattle had filled this room to its fullest as they awaited the judging of the premium cattle contest, and had Aimee more than once repelled by the order and wishing her mother had set up closer to the entrance.

The morning had yet to be prosperous. Many bodies had filed past their table; stopping occasionally to browse at the many items displayed, then continued past. Gwen Smith had made a few sales where Aimee had yet to sell a single thing. She found herself doubting her own handiwork to the point she began comparing hers to other afghans for sale in the rec hall.

With a yawn she unwittingly admitted the day was becoming terribly long and dull even though it was still early. Unlike her mother who appeared content and pleased, Aimee wondered dreadfully how much longer this day would last.

“What time did you say the craft show ended?” She attempted to put a nonchalant tone into her voice.

Her mother took a quick glance at the delicate watch around her wrist. “Four o’clock. Another four hours. Are you getting hungry?”

Hope flickered. “Actually I am.”

“It’s a good thing I packed a lunch. I’m always prepared.” She bent over and pulled a small cooler out from under one of the tables.

Aimee’s shoulders drooped.

As Gwen straightened, her attention was drawn to the entrance of the hall. “Well look who’s here.”

Aimee followed her direction and saw Colin standing just inside the hall’s doorway, glancing about him as if lost. Immediately a spark of pleasure lifted her spirits at the mere sight of him. His searching eyes halted at her table where they encountered her watching him. He smiled then proceeded to weave his way through the herd of folks crowding the hall toward her.

Foolishly she waited elatedly as if she were twelve years old again.

Before he could open his mouth and say hello, her mother caught his attention. “Colin, what brings you out here today?”

He gave a lopsided grin. “Can’t never resist a fair. Still a kid at heart.”

“Then you should be outside at the fairgrounds, not in here. I couldn’t imagine there being anything of interest in here for you.”

“Actually, I came to see how Aimee was doing.” His glance slid her way. “Sell anything yet?”

Again, as if she were a foolish schoolgirl, she seemed to lose her voice in the depths of those wonderful chocolate eyes. Instead, she meekly shook her head.

“Really?” He sounded generally surprised then walked over to the table displaying the blankets. “Maybe what you need is a sales pitch.”

Taking the blanket which she had just rearranged neatly, he turned around and lifted the blanket high over his head.
