CHAPTER 11

It was entirely possible that Adam would be a more difficult case for Taft to work on than his mother was, which he would never have guessed in a million years.

The boy was certainly more prone to play and fun than his mother, but he could not seem to let go of the reserve and decorum his grandmother had instilled in him.

Manners were all well and good, but a boy in the countryside deserved to romp and play and get into all manner of scrapes. Adam continued to ask about his lessons rather than to explore, no matter how Taft tried to convince him.

Alexandrina was not interested in arranging for tutors yet, given there was still an entire life with them at Battensay to adjust to, but if the routine of Stonehall was what he was used to, perhaps they ought to consider implementing something of a schedule for him. He would have chafed at such a thing at Adam’s age, but he’d had an absent upbringing, not a restrictive one.

Going out to the village of Godfrey for the day had been his suggestion for them all at breakfast, as a way to help them get acquainted with the area as well as some of the villagers, and he had great hopes that Adam would be as fascinated by the place as Taft had been. After all, there was an ancient oak tree perfect for climbing, ruins of a long-demolished abbey to explore, and if one was fortunate enough to see it, a rather thriving market day that any active child would consider a feast for the eyes, if not also for the stomach.

If Adam was not completely enamored by the village and begging to sneak off to it in the days following, Taft would forfeit desserts for an entire year.

Which he had no intention of doing.

The only question he truly had, then, was what his wife would make of it.

He could see the concern in her eyes whenever Adam said something rather unchildlike, when he would look at something childish with disdain, when he sat in silence rather than engage in conversation or activity. It was clear the boy had been stifled in the months when his mother had been removed from his life, by the idea of a child his grandmother had wanted him to be.

To rid a child of his youth in such a way while she had indulged a son in housing his mistresses under the same roof as his wife?

Utter madness. It was fortunate they had been able to retrieve Adam when they had, hopefully before it was too late to remind him of the childhood to be had.

Taft looked at the boy now as he rode with his mother on a horse. The day was fine, so they had opted to ride rather than take the carriage, and Alexandrina had proven herself to be an excellent rider. He should have anticipated that, as she seemed to excel in everything she set her mind to.
