Chapter 7

"Are you going to talk to me?"

"No." I stumbled to my bedroom. Oreo looked up from the middle of the bed, blinking as I switched on the light. I tried to pull back the bedding but I kept falling down.

"Somebody slipped me a Mickey," I mumbled, crawling across the bed.

"I think you slipped yourself the Mickey." Jason undid my shoelaces, pulled off my shoes and I heard him opening the front door and closing it again. I felt his hands on my feet, pulling off my socks in a rough way. He turned my body over and undid my belt, pulling down my pants. It was not a gentle gesture. There was a grim expression on his face as he pulled my shirtsleeves down from my arms.

"Are you okay? Think you need to throw up?" he asked and I knew he was angry. Why was he angry?

"I'm fine."

"Well, I'm going to sleep upstairs. I don't want you to be in the apartment alone."

"No. No...you go home. S'okay." I rolled over and lay on my belly. The room swam in a myriad of unpleasant colors.

"What are you doing?"

I don't want to see you go. I shut my eyes. It wouldn't hurt so much if I didn't see it.

"Mingo..." His voice trailed off and I heard him get up and walk out of the room. He switched off the bedroom light and I waited for the sound of the front door opening and closing. It didn't. I drifted in and out of a difficult, restless sleep. It was very early morning before I finally fell into a deep sleep and then something forced me awake. Voices. I could hear him talking. He was trying so hard to be quiet, yet I could hear him.

"Nothing...absolutely nothing. I don't think your information was accurate. That's all I'm saying. Look, I can't talk now. I'll call you later."

I inched toward his voice. He was in the kitchen and he was pacing in an agitated way. Careful to keep very still and quiet, I glimpsed him talking on a cell phone. I'd never seen him use a cell phone.

"Just stop, all right? I said I'll call you later," he repeated and ended the call. "Fuck!" he muttered and stormed out of the kitchen into the living room. In the emerging dawn, I saw him walking up the stairs to the loft. I sank back against the wall. What the hell was going on? I stood there for a moment, then I heard the unmistakable sound of typing. He was on my computer!

The typing stopped and my heart almost did, too. I backed toward the bedroom and could hear him stealing down the stairs. Oh God, he was coming to check on me. I made it back to the bed and was strewn across it by the time he reached my door. I heard him walking slowly into the room. He took his time and it frightened me, knowing he was watching me, studying me. He came very close to my face and some guardian angel stepped in and protected me.
