Chapter Ten
A knock on the door wakes me. Groaning, I ignore it and roll over, burying my face in the duvet. It feels like Iâve had about two hours of sleep, and unless the building is on fire or someoneâs died, Iâm not moving.
The knock sounds again, more insistent this time.
âGo away,â I grumble, pulling the pillow over my head to block out the sound, knowing whoever it is will hear me with their supernatural hearing. Weâre in a werewolf only town, after all.
Instead of getting the message, this seems to only spur them on, and the knocking becomes louder. My head throbs with each bash of their fist on the door.
âOkay, okay.â I throw back the sheets and swing my legs over the side of the bed, hauling myself upright.
Iâm sure my face is a puffy red mess from crying on and off all night. Once I saw how devastated my dad was after the councilâs announcement, I knew I had to pull it together for him, so I spent the rest of the evening putting on a brave face. We left the social immediately after he shifted back into human form, our whole pack departing as one unit, showing weâre united in this. None of us felt particularly social after the announcement anyway.
Alpha Green tried to follow us, calling my name, but my alpha just snarled and told him now was not the time. Thankfully, he listened, because Iâm not sure what would have happened if he hadnât.
Once we got back to the hotel, I began arguing with my dad and Nicolai, trying to convince them it was safe to sleep alone. Neither of them wanted to leave me alone, and my dad suggested that I should have someone stay the night with me. I flat out refused, which only made him fret more. Most werewolves love being surrounded by their pack, especially when something awful happens. However, when Iâm overwhelmed, that just makes me feel like Iâm being suffocated, and I have to get away. They donât understand me or my need for privacy because it goes against their instincts.
As soon as I finally managed to convince them that I needed to be on my own for a few hours so I could sleep, I allowed the tears to come. Iâm all for being strong and putting on a front for others, but in private, Iâm allowed to fall apart. The possibility of love, of an exciting new life, was revealed to me, only for that to be crushed at my feet. Iâll never make it through these trials. Thereâs not a doubt in my mind that the council will make sure that I end up dying by some tragic âaccident.â
Thatâs what upsets me the most about all of thisânot what Iâm going to lose, but what losing me will do to my father. He barely survived the death of my mother, so losing me will destroy him.
The pounding on the door starts again, and I growl halfheartedly in the back of my throat.
