Chapter 3

Sam

“H ow did I not know it was Valentine’s Day?” I asked when I spotted all the heart decorations strung up between twinkle lights in Mel’s bar.

“Well, probably because you slept through most of the day,” Damien said. He was fresh from the shower and his dark hair gleamed under the bar lighting.

“After your mates gave you an unforgettable string of presents,” Mathis added. “Just in your size, too.”

“Hush, you,” I said and elbowed him in the ribs. “People already think you’re depraved. No sense in giving them proof.”

He lifted my hand and brushed his lips over it. “My Sam. What can I get you to drink.”

“Water. I’m feeling a little dehydrated. Wonder why?” I winked at him and he flushed with pleasure.

John, Jessica, and Emily were already at the bar, receiving congratulations and well wishes from the shifters and the coven. I squeezed Damien’s arm and he pulled me in tighter.

“I can’t believe this is their last night here,” I murmured as I watched the flushed, happy little family.

“They’ll be back.” Damien smoothed my hair back. “You look ravishing in that dress.”

“No more,” I begged. I was going to end up with a bladder infection if they kept at me the way they had through the day.

He laughed as Mathis reappeared with my water.

“So, did you ask her?” Mathis looked to Damien.

I glanced between them. “Ask me what?”

“John requested that you sing tonight,” Mathis said and gestured at the karaoke machine.

My teeth sank into my lower lip. I’d been dodging it since Mel and Javier had first asked me to christen their new acquisition. I’d sang in the shower and to the baby and my guys. But it had been years since I’d sung in public.

“It would mean a lot to him, firecracker,” Damien said.

“And to us,” Mathis agreed.

I took a sip from my water before answering. “Okay.”

I had held on to a cougar as it raced across the dunes. I’d stood on the roof with my two naked lovers. What was a little song after all that?

First things first. I needed my Emily fix. I settled into a booth with Mathis while Grandpa Damien offered to take her off a harried-looking Jessica. I’d wanted to spend more time with them, but the week had flown by in a flurry of packing and arranging all the details of their move as well as the ongoing construction. If I never saw another piece of plywood again it would be too soon.

I spent the next hour talking nonsense to Emily as well as chanting little spells in her ears. “What are you saying to her?” Damien asked at one point.

“Nothing,” I feigned an innocent expression.

“I call BS,” Mathis said. “You’re bewitching her, aren’t you.”

“Maybe.” Was it really so wrong to tell your granddaughter that if she ever needed someplace safe to go that she should come to me?

If so, I didn’t want to be right.

Finally, the little peanut drifted to sleep, cradled in her grandfather’s arms.

“We should probably take her home,” John said.
