Build Positive Relationships with Others
Working supportively and cooperatively with others is key to supporting your wellbeing and mental health at work. Connecting with others is not just for difficult or busy periods at work though. Other people can be a source of support in a number of situations and can make being at work more enjoyable.
Be welcoming to new members of staff. Remember what it was like when you were new. Without being overbearing, share the knowledge, the lessons, the experiences, and the skills you've accumulated.
Aim to be sociable with your co-workers. When you take a break, for example, instead of looking at your phone, engage with your colleagues. Find common ground. You won't always have lots in common with all your colleagues, but finding something that you both like – such as a sports team, TV programme, or hobby – can give you something positive to talk about and help build good relationships.
Be nice. You can choose to be there or not for colleagues. While it's important not to take on too much when you've already got a lot to do, helping others doesn't have to involve a lot of time or effort. Even small things like a kind word or friendly smile can make a difference to someone's day. Ask how someone's weekend was; show interest and ask questions about what they tell you. Carry out random acts of kindness; occasionally bring in cake or fresh fruit, offer to make tea or coffee for others.
Get involved with or organize lunchtime events; a walk or a swim for example. Learn something new with colleagues; learn how to play chess or to knit for example. Now and again, do something after work; bowling, a dance class, a meal out, etc. I really enjoy running and the physical and mental health benefits that it brings so I started a running group at work. Our weekly run brings together colleagues of all running abilities from across company. The support and camaraderie between colleagues means that each run ends with everyone feeling good – no matter how hard the run! We sometimes enter marathons and half marathons together and raise money for a good cause. Michael. Call centre worker
