CHAPTER NINE

“I’m here to see Jess Williams.” Megan said. She kept her voice resolute, her head held high.

The police officer peered over his desk. “And you are?”

“Megan Williams, sir. I’m here to see my brother, Jess Williams,” Megan repeated. She had never been in a police station before but she was determined not to let the grim surroundings intimidate her.

“Well, Megan Williams, you had better follow me.” The guard’s hand lifted a bunch of keys from a hook on the wall behind him, “This way, miss,” he said, walking off. She followed the officer in silence down a dark narrow corridor, until he stopped outside a large metal door and turned to her.

“Your brother is due to be moved to Cardiff Gaol to await trial, but we haven’t got a date yet. While your brother is held here at Bridgend police station, he will be allowed one visitor for one hour a week. Other than his counsel, Mr Charles Joseph, that is.”

“His counsel? I don’t understand. We can’t afford—”

“Don’t worry, miss. Mr Joseph has been appointed by the courts to act on your brother’s behalf and a lucky man he is too, having such a fine solicitor fighting his corner.”

“I’m sure my brother doesn’t think himself at all lucky,” Megan snapped.

“Quite. Anyway, in you go, miss,” he said, noisily unlocking the door, “I shall return in an hour.”

As she entered, Jess walked towards her, arms outstretched, his shirt-sleeves rolled up showing strong, sun-tanned arms. Megan couldn’t believe how much he had changed since she had been away. He stood at least a foot taller than herself. Her beloved Jess was no longer a boy but a fine strong-willed young man.

He flung his arms around her, embracing her. “Megs, Megs, it’s so good to see you.”

“Oh, Jess, I’m so sorry. I should have been there for you, I should have listened . . .”

Jess released her. “I didn’t mean to kill him. I only wanted to stop him hitting Phyllis,” he spoke softly, his eyes intent on hers. She realized that while his overall appearance might have changed, deep down he was still the same sensitive young boy she had left behind.

“I know, Jess, bach. Even before Mam told me all about it, I knew it must have been an accident. I believe you, and so will the court, you’ll see.”

He swallowed hard.

They stood for a while just staring at each other, so relieved to see each other once again.

“Shall we sit?” Jess eventually asked, leading her over to a small table in the corner of the small, box-like room. “We haven’t got long and there’s so much I want to know.” He had composed himself, but she could tell it was just an act put on for her benefit.

“Mam sends her love, she’s holding up well. She wanted to come but in her condition . . .” Megan instantly touched the front of her coat, hoping her own bulge was not showing. She had to keep it hidden, at least, until she found a way to tell her mother.
