Chapter 17

She’d been eaten by a tentacle mud monster.

A. Tentacle. Mud. Monster.

There was slime–or was it sludge–all over her. It was all Evie could do to keep from running her hands down her body in a poor attempt to remove it as it began to dry on her skin and clothes. Not that her efforts mattered; her hands were covered in the sticky substance as well, and she hated it. She felt, and undoubtedly looked, disgusting.

Cazar was no better off. Even though Joe had saved her, Cazar’s clothing was ruined, and they were both covered in mud monster goop.

He carried her silently through the jungle, her legs wrapped securely around his torso and her arms linked around his neck. She’d never had someone carry her so effortlessly like this before. The scenery around them was romantic and the temperature was dewy.

It probably would have been lovely if she hadn’t just been eaten!

“You’re shaking, Evie,” Cazar commented, running a hand down her back soothingly. She hadn’t even realized, but now that he’d mentioned it, she was shivering, and her teeth were chattering as if she were freezing. “You’re alright. I won’t let anything hurt you.”

Cazar began to purr, and the deep rumble in his chest stopped her shivers, immediately soothing her. Hugging him tighter, she relaxed more fully into her mate.

Evie burrowed her head into his chest and breathed raggedly through her mouth. It didn’t matter how much she tried to avoid it, the odor coming off the both of them was nauseating. Inescapable.

“We smell horrible.”

“I know. Just a few minutes more and I’ll clean you.”

Despite everything that had just happened, Evie couldn’t help the thrill that went through her at the idea.

“You’re going to clean me?” she asked hopefully. Maybe being partially devoured by a monster had its upsides.

Cazar chuckled. “We may be covered in grime, Evadora, but I can scent your desire easily. Perhaps when we set up camp for the evening I can tend to all of your needs.”

Evie blushed, unused to Cazar blatantly flirting with her.

She loved it.

Evie’s grip tightened around his neck, pulling herself up to whisper in his ear. “Maybe when you’re done cleaning me, I can show you how much I appreciate all your hard work.”

His answering growl was inherently carnal, and her core spasmed from the sound. His arms tightened around her and he picked up the pace until he was almost running through the jungle. Trees and vegetation passed them in a blur of green until the sound of running water filled her ears.

Cazar stopped, setting Evie gently onto her feet.

They were at a river, and without missing a beat, Evie quickly began to remove her ruined clothing, Cazar following suit. She paused right before she dipped a toe toward the water, looking back at Cazar worriedly.

“Nothing in here is going to eat me, is it?”

“The only thing that might eat you in that water will be me,” Cazar said with a small smirk.

Evie cracked a smile. Look at her mate, turning into a shameless flirt.
