It had been a week since Denver saved Maddie’s car from the Misty Mountain pranksters who disconnected her battery. Every day, she said a little prayer of thanks when her car started. Turning that ignition to hear only a click had shaken her confidence. Hopefully, that feeling would fade soon.

There was a smile on her face as she pulled into the Wilson Automotive parking lot. She grabbed her usual space and climbed out. Only as she started toward the building did it hit her that the service bays were closed, and the open sign was dark. His truck wasn’t in the parking lot, either.

Denver always beat her here. Always.

A little panic set in as she pulled her phone out of her purse and glanced at the screen. No calls from him. She rarely called his phone number—only twice. Once when he had run out to get a part and a customer had a question and once when she’d forgotten to turn off the coffeepot before leaving for the day.

Today, she had no choice but to call him. The two mechanics he’d hired would be showing up at eight, and they didn’t have a way in, either. They’d all be stranded until Denver arrived.

“Hey,” he said, answering on the first ring. “I was just about to call you. I’m in a bind here. Could you swing by my house and pick me up?”

She was still walking toward the door, but his words stopped her in her tracks. She looked around like this might be some sort of prank and he was parked across the street, watching her.

“Car trouble?” she joked.

“Yep,” he said. “As in, my truck is missing.”

“What?” She plugged her left ear, the occasional car whizzing by and threatening to drown out his words. “What do you mean, missing?”

“I came out this morning, and the driveway was empty. The closest neighbor’s a half mile away, so nobody would have seen anything. I knew I should have invested in some security cameras.”

“Someone stole your pickup,” she repeated, trying to process the information.

“It looks like it. The police are coming to write a report, but they only had one officer on duty, so I told them to meet me at the shop.”

“I’m on my way,” she said. “Text me your address. I’ll put it in my GPS.”

“Will do. See you in a minute.”

She pulled out of the lot and headed left. He lived in that direction. She knew because she’d seen him make that same turn out of the parking lot every time they’d closed together.

His text came through as she was passing the big church in town, so she pulled into the lot and tapped on the address to add it to her GPS.

As she followed the directions, Maddie tried to ignore the feeling that had settled deep in her heart. Almost every day, she reminded herself he was her boss. This was a typical boss-employee relationship, but when they did things for each other like this, it was easy to imagine what it would be like to date him for real.
