“We’ve worked hard today,” Brianna said Sunday night as they exited Brianna’s Book Nook.

Lauralie and Maddie stood behind their best friend, waiting while she locked the door. This was the last time Brianna would close the store, so they wanted to give her a moment to take it all in.

But when she turned, she had a smile on her face. Maybe it was that she was starting a new job tomorrow. Maybe it was that the job was with a boss who happened to be super hunky. Not as good-looking as his buddy Sam—not to Lauralie, anyway.

“Let’s go grab some pizza,” Brianna said.

“Yes!” Maddie said. But both Lauralie and Brianna knew pizza wasn’t what Maddie was excited about. “I need to make sure nobody beat me on Pixel Bots.”

Being at the top of the winners’ list on that arcade game had been Maddie’s big thing, going all the way back to when they were kids. Some things never changed. Even now, they couldn’t pay a visit to Cloudtop Pizzeria without Maddie insisting on playing several rounds of that game.

“You can catch us up on all your school gossip,” Brianna said as they started walking. “I hear you had dinner with a certain football coach last night.”

“You did?” Maddie asked.

How could Brianna have possibly heard about that? Nobody knew but her, Sam, and Aunt Judi. Lauralie’s aunt had shown up toward the end of their dinner, offering to clean up. She probably hadn’t meant to send Lauralie and Sam their separate ways, but that was exactly what happened. They didn’t even linger in the driveway to talk, knowing Aunt Judi would be peeking through the blinds.

Instead, she’d gone to bed and gotten up early to come straight over here. She hadn’t even had time to talk to her friends. The place had been a flood of customers all day until finally they were left with only a couple of boxes of books.

“I heard about it before it even happened,” Brianna said. “Mrs. Taylor was at the bookstore, asking if I knew you were having dinner with Coach Wolf. She said she heard the two of you were dating.”

“You’re dating Sam Wolf?” Maddie asked.

They’d reached Town Hall and were staring across the street at the pizzeria. It looked fairly busy, but at least there wasn’t a line out the door. That happened sometimes.

“No,” Lauralie said. “You guys would be the first to know if we were dating.”

But would they? She’d been spending a lot of time with him and had certainly developed feelings. Normally, that was something she would have shared with her two best friends, but she hadn’t said a word. Not a peep. She couldn’t even give a reason for the secrecy, other than maybe she was denying it to herself.

“I’m just helping him with his classes,” Lauralie blurted. “Nothing more, nothing less.”

“Good,” Brianna said. “I mean, of course, we’d support you if you did want to go out with him.”

“He always seemed kind of like a meathead to me,” Maddie said.
